It’s been seven years since a game has managed to win both the Kennerspiel Des Jahres and the Deutscher Spielepreis in the same year. However, Elizabeth Hargrave’s hit board game, Wingspan, has risen to new heights!
Wingspan is a card-driven, engine-builder in which players become bird enthusiasts. They attempt to attract and discover as many different species of birds as possible and house them in three different ecosystems to gain bonuses throughout the game. Wingspan has been the hit of the year and was released to fanfares of praise.
While it won the critics vote for the Kennerspiel Des Jarhes, the Deutscher Spielepreis is awarded to the game that achieved the highest number of votes from the public. Games such as Spirit Island, Detective and Just One were in a list of nominees. All of them are games that have been released in the German language within the last 12 months.
Wingspan, of course, came out on top to claim the main prize and I can certainly see why. Elizabeth Hargrave has managed to take a theme that is somewhat niche and not often seen in the tabletop world, and turn it into a beautifully crafted game that has truly triumphed and won the hearts and minds of many board gamers.
A hearty congratulations to Elizabeth and the team behind Wingspan for another deserving win. Well done to all the other nominations too!
