Whilst not offering the “price per pack” value of a booster box of 36 packs, I think that a Pokémon Elite Trainer Box is still a fantastic purchase. Here are a few reasons why:
Collectability
An Elite Trainer box contains some great items for the Pokémon Card Collector.
· Promo Card: Available only in the Elite Trainer Box, the card is generally an illustration rare. This means that it looks the absolute business in your collectors folder alongside all your other coolest looking pulls.
· Sleeves: What kind of Pokémon Trading Card collector isn’t going to take care of there most precious pulls with card sleeves? The Elite Trainer Boxes come boasting an amazing 65 sleeves. Like the promo card, these are unique to the Elite Trainer Box and show off some of the hottest looking designs available. They look that good, some collectors store sleeves face out in their binders.
· Packs: Elite Trainer Boxes come with 8-9 Booster Packs, collectors will love this opportunity to pull even more rare cards!
A collector’s desire to have unique items will be really well fed with the promo card and sleeves above, but what about Trading Card Game players?
Player Support
· Energy: If you buy solely booster packs with a view to building a competitive deck, you are unlikely to have enough energy cards of the required colour in your collection. The Elite Trainer Boxes come with a pack of 45 Energy cards, 5 of each type a welcome boost to your supplies.
· Coin-Flip Dice: Named as a “competition-legal coin-flip die” (spoiler, this just means a see-through 6-sided dice). The dice in an ETB are a nice looking, what I would refer to as “gem” dice having grown up gaming in the 90s and some even have glitter in them too. They tend to have a symbol or an “ex” in place of the 6 too.
· Damage Dice: To be used in place of cardboard damage counters, an ETB contains a set of damage dice to track Pokémon health with in games.
· Counters: The ETB also contains some acrylic condition counters. Once more, these represent an upgrade on the card tokens that come supplied with pre-built decks and look infinitely cooler.
· Those Sleeves again: The 65 sleeves are enough to protect your entire deck letting you face your opponent in style and keep your cards protected from flying dice at the same time.
With all this great gear to bring to the gaming table, an Elite Trainer Box is definitely a worthwhile investment for a Trading Card Game player too.
My son loves an Elite Trainer Box, he has bought several and watching him open them is always accompanied by a feeling of enjoyment and anticipation. Seeing the art on the promo cards in reality, rather than in a photo. Opening up the packs of cards, putting the best pulls into the limited-edition sleeves. There is definitely an “experience” in opening an ETB that goes beyond ripping through a load of booster packs.
