For all of you Warhammer 40k fans out there, I'm sure you've heard about Darktide. And if not, you're about to learn very quickly.
Darktide is an online 4-player cooperative game set in the 40k universe. Play with your friends and fight your way through hordes of undead Poxwalkers and Plaguebearers. Play as one of four heroes of the Imperium to beat back the swarm and retake the hive-city of Tertium.
Development
Since its initial announcement, a lot more information has been given for this new game. For starters, the game is set to be released to the public in Spring of 2022. Not long to wait now! The development of Darktide has come along swimmingly, with new trailers and screenshots having been released to show us what nightmares we're in for.
On top of this, the brilliant Dan Abnett (no I'm not biased) has been announced as the co-writer of the game, making it quite clear that the story of this Warhammer horror is going to have an amazing campaign (yup, totally not biased). Abnett is the author behind many Horus Heresy books, such as Legion, as well as the popular Ravenor series of books. His touch of brilliance should spice the story up and make the game an enjoyable play experience.
Characters
We now know who the player characters are, as well as a mysterious leader for whom you'll be working. Darktide will apparently feature character customisation, allowing you to decide your playstyle and appearance. You'll be able to pick your class, skillset, loadout and looks. Now if this doesn't sound like a brilliant start, I don't know what will. You can create your own 40k character to battle through the underhives of the Imperium and purge heretics! Every long-time fan of Warhammer's dream!
As well as four playable characters, there is also the elusive Inquisitor. Your character is a convict, guilty of a crime against the Imperium and its people, and the only way to repay your debts is by aiding the Imperium against the forces of chaos! Impress the Inquisitor with your skills and weapons. Blast las-holes into the enemy. Bash heads together. Blow them to smithereens! How you get the job done is up to you, just get it done efficiently..or your superiors won't be too happy.
Combat
If you don't know already, the developers in charge of perfecting this game are Fat Shark. These are the same genius minds who were behind Vermintide, and they're stepping up their game when it comes to slaughtering the hordes. Built upon the successful combat system of its fantasy predecessor, Darktide integrates the gunplay of the 41st Millenium. According to the developers, the combat is being designed so that you can feel the weight as you swing your chainsword, and you have to manage the kick of your Ogryn shotgun. These are just two examples, but what I'm trying to say is that they're planning to make the combat feel alive and realistic (well, as realistic as sci-fi can be).
Conclusion
Overall, this game is looking brilliant so far. I'll be sure to snag myself a copy as close to release as possible. I can't wait to bury the teeth of my sword into some daemon flesh, nor can I wait to fill a Nurgle-tainted undead with holes from my lasgun. I would hope that, after reading this and watching the trailer, you will feel the same.
Now get out there convict, and make the God-Emperor proud!
