Video Game News Round-Up May 2022

Video Game News Round Up May 2022

We should all take a moment to thank May. It gave us some good weather, a bunch of new releases and a Bank Holiday weekend to enjoy them. And it did all of this while being attacked by Buckingham Palace. Poor old May has had one of its glorious days ripped from its bosom and given to June as part of the Jubilee celebrations. Sure, we still get a long weekend, in fact, it’s a four day weekend thanks to the Queen, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to steal from May. Especially considering that the four day weekend will be filled with flag-waving nonsense, most likely outside, rather than quality gaming time.

But whatever, that’s why the Switch has a handheld mode right? Speaking of which, let’s get on with it, shall we?

I’m currently playing: I used May to introduce my eldest to the Nintendo Switch and revisited Super Mario 3D World, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokemon Shining Pearl, and Mario Odyssey. Once my boy was in bed I chipped away at 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and bagged myself a Platinum trophy on PlayStation4.

I’m currently hyped for: The Quarry on PlayStation4 and Mario Strikers: Battle League Football on the Switch.

New Games

May brought with it a bumper crop of gaming goodness starting with Evil Dead: The Game for the PlayStations and Xboxes. The Switch received Let’s Get Fit and Hidden Objects Collection Volume 2. Vampire The Masquerade: Swansong hit both PlayStations and the Xbox family. Eastward finally received the physical release treatment for the Nintendo Switch. The GOTY edition of Mortal Shell hit PlayStation4 and PlayStation5. While Sniper Elite 5 hit all platforms. May then rounded out with the release of My Little Pony: A Maretime Bay Adventure, Arcade Paradise and Autobahn Police Simulator 3.

June is also bringing plenty of new releases, especially on Nintendo Switch. Things start off on the 3rd with the Wonder Boy Collection for PlayStation4 and Switch. The 8th sees Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series come out on all platforms. The 10th will be an expensive day for me with both The Quarry coming out on PlayStation4 and PS5 AND Mario Strikers: Battle League Football on Switch. Demon Slayer - Kimetsu No Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles and Final Vendetta also hit the Switch on the same day. The 24th sees MX vs ATV Legends race onto Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles. While the Nintendo Switch gets Pocky & Rocky Reshrined and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes that same day. June rounds things off on the 30th with the release of Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak for Nintendo’s machine.

Announcements

Release date for Dead Space announced.

EA has confirmed that their highly-anticipated Dead Space Remake will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on 27th January next year.

The remake is a “ground-up reworking” of the 2008 original, promising to “raise the level of horror and immersion to unprecedented heights”. Of course, you’ll be controlling engineer Isaac Clarke as he battles necromorphs through the mining ship USG Ishimura. But EA Motive’s version promises to enhance audio and visuals, alongside other tweaks to improve story, characters, and game mechanics.

EA Motive has given Dead Space fans a thorough behind-the-scenes look at its development. Revealing more on its gameplay changes, audio, and art across three separate live streams. Although with a release date now in place they may - much like the USG Ishimura - go dark until October. When a Dead Space Remake showcase will take place... Best. Halloween. Ever.

Accessibility features God of War Ragnarok revealed

We don’t have a release date yet. But, Sony has listed the accessibility features in its forthcoming God of War Ragnarok. Much like Spider Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part Two, Kratos will come with an extensive suite of 60 options.

A redesigned UI will allow for more flexibility and readability, controller remapping will allow more customisation to all systems. Many of the features included in the PC version of God of War will be carried over to Ragnarok such as auto-sprint functions, a persistent on-screen reticle and toggle options for aiming and blocking. As well as several new features which are new for the latest title.

A PlayStation blog post mentions: “numerous improvements to subtitles and captions, not just in their visuals but in their function too. Such as expanded sound effects captions and direction indicators for critical gameplay sounds.”

“Then there are text and icon size options... a high contrast mode to apply colour to in-game objects and people. Navigation assist to orient your view, traversal assistance when jumping. Audio cues for interactive objects, and more.”

“And there’s still more to be shown.”

Modern Warfare II gets a release date

Developer Infinity Ward’s next instalment in the Call of Duty series is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warefare (sort of reboot) and will be aptly named Modern Warfare 2. It’ll launch on 28th October although many details, including platform releases, are currently unknown. So far all we’ve got is a trailer with no gameplay. The following is a description from Activision Blizzard: “Task Force 141 makes its massive return with a global squad of iconic veterans... These Operators include Captain John Price, Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley, John ‘Soap’ MacTavish, Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick and introducing Mexican Special Forces Colonel Alejandro Vargas.”

And That’s That!
