Toy Story: Obstacles and Adventures Preview

Toy Story - Obstacles and Adventures Preview

Toy Story is hands down my favourite movie. The LEGO Movie came pretty close, but the whole Toy Story series has a special place in my heart. So, when The OP announced Obstacles and Adventures, I was super excited. The OP (previously known as USAopoly) have had a few big hits with some really popular games themed with different intellectual properties.

This year they seem to be re-skinning all of their popular games of 2018. This practice is pretty boring from an innovation perspective, but it's a license to print money. However, if you’re going to re-skin Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle with I theme that I’m at least one hundred times more interesting in, then I am ready!

Gameplay

Like Harry Potter, Toy Story: Obstacles and Adventures is a co-operative deck-building game. Players take on the roles of main characters from the films. It's a game for 2-5 players, which characters including:

  • Woody.
  • Buzz Lightyear.
  • Bo Peep.
  • Rex.

Presumably, another character will be confirmed to take the number to five.

The thing I loved about this system is that the game develops as you play. Each game you’ll unlock a new box of content, giving you access to more characters and additional mechanisms that add complexity and difficulty to the game. This creates a campaign or legacy-type feel, that always makes me want to play just one more game.

Assuming that the game will be about defeating different foes from the film, I can’t wait to encounter Sid, the Prospector, Lotso or the creepy puppets from the latest movie, if their license extends to all four of the movies. I can only hope for item cards like army men, a string of monkeys or your helpful friend, ‘The Claw’. I’m intrigued to see whether each game is one film and they’ll have to bring in some of the short films like ‘Toy Story That Time Forgot’ to make up the numbers. After all, there isn't seven books worth of content like with Harry Potter.

Toy Story: Obstacles and Adventures is aimed at a younger audience, but it’s not yet clear if that is simply about the lighter theme or the complexity of the mechanisms. I am definitely 8+ though, so I can guarantee that this game is for me!

Toy Story: Obstacles and Adventures - Coming Soon

Toy Story: Obstacles and Adventures was announced during the hype for the new Toy Story 4 movie. Hopefully it will still appeal to nostalgic fans like me when it’s released in Autumn. I can’t wait to see all of my favourite moments and characters turned into a game using some of my favourite mechanisms, with a campaign feel that means I’ll be rushing to play.
