Here we are, back with part two of our Halloween videogame special. This time we’re looking at games featuring zombies. There’s no reason for us to stay any longer than we have to. Let’s split up look for any survivors and get out of here. So read on quickly before the horde surrounds us!
Dead Rising Series
This one is a bit of a cheat as there are currently four main Dead Rising games to choose from. Each one mixes horror and gore with arcade-action and comedy. Dead Rising see’s photographer Frank West stuck in a shopping mall during a zombie pandemic. You’ll explore your surroundings rescuing innocent people while uncovering a huge conspiracy. Dead Rising 2 raises the stakes by taking place in Las Vegas and giving you a daughter to look after. Dead Rising 3 goes city-wide and introduces the ability to craft vehicles to mow down hordes of the undead. And Dead Rising 4 see’s the official return of a battle-hardened Frank West. Take your pick, they’re all great.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
Hitler’s hordes are back for more in this insane shooter from the makers of Sniper Elite 4! Blast your way through occult enemies with epic weapons and a brand-new campaign for 1-4 players. Set in an alternate history you’ll play through 1940s Europe, as you fight to save humankind from undead Armageddon! It’s fun, frantic and some quality four-player co-op to boot.
Plants vs Zombies Battle For Neighborville
If you’re after something less gory and a bit more garden-based then Plants vs Zombies will be right up your street. Tackle hilarious missions and defeat epic bosses across familiar locations. Collect medals and unlock new outfits. Team up with up to three friends and explore Giddy Park. Or jump into some 8v8 multiplayer in Turf Takeover, vanquishing opponents, blasting gnome bombs and bouncing on pink ooze.
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series
Not all zombie games are non-stop shooters and jump-scare filled nightmares. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series is episodic and narrative-driven. It tells the story of Lee and Clementine as they try to find safety in a zombie apocalypse. Decisions you make across the story will determine the friends and enemies you make along the way. It’s emotional throughout and gives a grounded and personal journey of survivors rather than a run ‘n’ gun style romp.
Resident Evil II
It wouldn’t be a list about zombie games if I didn’t mention Resident Evil. Sure you’ve got a whole host of games. If you want a classic horror story, go with the first Resident Evil, it’s set in a mansion and is full of classic horror moments. But for me, Resident Evil II is the pinnacle of the series. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the Resident Evil games for different reasons. Resident Evil Nemesis is a heart-pounding thrill ride. The fourth entry brings new life to the zombie-trope. Resident Evil 5 carried on from 4 and introduced co-op. For most fans, Resident Evil 6 went too far down the action route and left behind its survival horror routes, but it’s still fun. Resident Evil VII takes things back to the horror routes and Resident Evil VIII continued that. But Resident Evil II, especially the remake is the perfect blend of action and horror. It looks and plays fantastically and has the most iconic location in gaming history – The Raccoon City Police Department. Play this one with the lights off if you dare!
