I’m getting a reputation for being game-food obsessed, but honestly I just love quirky global and national celebrations. And so many of them have a delicious theme. Selecting particular edibles for exaltation always brings a smile to my face, so please do forgive me for this and all future collaborations between cardboard and tasty treats!
11th October is World Egg Day. I suppose the big question should be; what came first? World Chicken Day or this?? Ha ha. Regardless of its origins, here are 5 games where you can celebrate all things which love to be hatched, flipped, scrambled, boiled, and fried! Haha
WINGSPAN
Probably the most famous “eggies” related game in modern board gaming history, Stonemaier’s beautiful engine building, hand management, tableau building game is filled to the brim with delicate birds and, most importantly here, their eggs. As a resource in and of themselves, as well as an ovoid representation of end game points, eggies are needed to lay birds into your habitats. They also feature heavily in public end of round goals, and are super tactile and pretty. Every expansion to the OG includes a different coloured set to add to your collection, plus you can buy more as an add-on!
HONK!
A fun one for wee gamers, HONK! has players hunting for those elusive golden eggies! The game is a lovely representation of resource management distilled down into a decision space that is easy for young players to understand. The rules are simple - choose your food, match the requirements on a goose tile in the pile, and uncover those delicious eggies for end game points! With golden eggs hidden in the pile somewhere, you need to feed the perfect goose at just the right time!
EGG SLAM!
This game contains a deck of cards showing primary coloured, dazed looking chickens. Why? Well you are in a race, and no decent dash is complete without chickens and eggs! Designed by a kiddo for kiddos, this takes the universally known game of snap and jazzes it up. The birds and the backgrounds don’t match, there are three piles in action at any one time, and you win cards by combining the colours on two piles and correctly stating what colour they combine to make. Snap just levelled up!
GO CUCKOO!
Oh you cheeky bird! Did you know cuckoos never build their own nests? That’s right – they go and make themselves at home in another bird’s comfy roost! Not only that but they sneak their eggs in so that another bird can do all the hard incubation work! In this fun dexterity game (housed in a beautiful tin), players are building a nest for Kiki one stick at a time. The colours on the end of the sticks determine whether you can lay an egg or add another stick. But beware! If sticks or eggies drop, Kiki is not going to be happy!
WYRMSPAN
Now, if birds aren’t your thing or you just love Dragons, or you are looking for more cogs in your engine, Wyrmspan could be an excellent choice. Inspired by the core gameplay of Wingspan (also in this list), the tableau building here requires a little more preparation. In order to entice powerful dragons to your player space, you first need to excavate caves for them to reside. Eggies become a necessary price to pay as you expand your collection of caves. And whilst you have more control over the resources you acquire over the course of the game, with more choice comes more responsibility. For selecting the best option for you that is! Will you explore and gather goodies from your dragon engines? Will you settle dragon into its new abode? Turns unfold and combinations of actions become possible if you can find ways to synergise between the developing elements on your player board. Eggies feature all over this game as a resource to spend or points to bank. And whilst there is guaranteed minim supply of 1 per round, you’ll still need to ensure you don’t scramble your chances of winning before the game is over!
Well, my brain is now thoroughly fried! I hope this list has egg-spired you to get your game on for World Egg Day!
