Top 5 Games for Popcorn Day

POPCORN DAY LOGO

I love how the opportunity to link games and food knows no bounds. And on 19 January, another pillar of pleasure gets added to the palace of pleasure! Popcorn Day Salty, sweet, chocolate coated, or plain. Popcorn comes in so many varieties, there’s always going to be one that takes your fancy. And the same can unequivocally said for games. To take it to a meta level, here are 5 games that have movies (aka the spiritual home of the cooked kernel) at their heart.

Back To The Future: Back In Time

When the world needs saving, you need to assemble your team. And in Back To The Future Back In Time, you are going to be one of the most famous film teams around. Taking on the roles of Marty, Doc, Jennifer, and of course Einstein, you are back in 1955, and you need to find three parts to fix the DeLorean. It won’t reach 1mph let alone the hallowed 88mph if it doesn’t work! Trouble is, Biff is intent on making your lives hell (no change there then!). Not only that but Marty’s parents are still being completely clueless when it comes to falling in love. Combining dice rolling, action selection, and push your luck, this is a game that Back to the Future film fans will want to play, and popcorn is the perfect snack to keep you going!

Harry Potter Labyrinth

Our son is potty about Happy Potter. Seriously, our house is full of wands, floating candles, robes, books, dvds, broomsticks….I do sometimes wonder if we have been magicked into the Weasley’s homely abode. Shelves full of wizarding jigsaws and movie tie in merch, the one thing that combines his love of all things HP and mazes is Harry Potter Labyrinth.

A family favourite in any of its varieties, Labyrinth is a tile sliding game where the goal is to be first to collect all your treasured items and race back to your base. As the name suggests, however, it is not just a straight shot. You must follow open paths which change with each turn. By pushing a tile into one of the rows or columns (where some of the pieces are fixed whilst others can move), the entire game-space can shift, throwing your plans and prospect of victory up in the air. Deciding whether to help yourself reach an icon or thwart a foe from moving on is just one of the decisions to make. You’ll wish you had a spell to see the icons your opponents are collection, but alas, no wizardry can help you here!

Movie Scene It

When you can’t decide on one film, Movie Scene It! will transport you right into the middle of lots of them! A trivia plus game for true film buffs, you can put all those hours training on Netflix, Apple, Amazon Prime TV, and Paramount to good use! Mixing traditional components with augmented Gamestar app assisted gameplay, you will be facing challenges as well as demands on your recall of classics and the latest films to hit the big and small screens.

For players aged 13+, you’ll be up against friends and family who know their Pacino from their De Niro. But it’s not all about the facts. You’ll be using your puzzle solving skills to become the prince or princess of popcorn. Having been around for decades, Movie Scene It! Has had a reboot for the App age. With the App acting as question master and a huge library of clips and questions, everyone can play Movie Scene It! again and again!

Star Wars Villainous: Power of the Dark Side.

Villainous is a pretty well-known game franchise, and Star Wars is a pretty well-known film franchise (Captain Understatement ready for duty, sir! Haha). So combining the two seems like a no-brainer for a series that started in the world of Disney and has since spread out in all super-villainous directions.

Taking control of one of 5 nefarious characters (Darth Vader, Asajj Ventress, Moff Gideon, Kylo Ren, and General Grievous), you’ve got fate, you’ve got villains, and you’ve got a need to be the worst (best) baddie in the galaxy!

Worker placement and hand management, you’ll be selecting actions and activating things to hit your very own win condition. With asymmetric boards, powers, and a whole heap of take that, not to mention missions, direct player interaction, and the power to summon the Force, Star Wars Villainous melds the original gameplay with some seriously deep-space IP!

Disney Lorcana Gateway

This is another wee cheat as there’s not just one movie featured in Lorcana; there are eleventy billion! And as a jumping in point to this trading card game (TCG) system, you cannot go wrong with Disney Lorcana Gateway. With a gentle and generous dollop of hand holding, this game took newbies like us and turned us into players who could understand the technique and structure of the gameplay. Furthermore, it turned us into players who are keen to try more! Giving tips on how to time and synergise specific characters to maximise their potential, you’ll see Winnie the Pooh taking down The Wicked Queen and many other matches which would never appear on screen.

Rules and a super helpful guide that develop as you hit checkpoints in tactics and strategy, it feels like a legacy style game with all the surprises that come with opening envelopes. But, in the best way, it then leaves you with two chonky starter decks and a board that you can keep using to develop your guaranteed Disney TCG addiction!
