Tomb Raider 25 Celebration – Tomb Raider II Recap

tomb raider 2 feature

In 1996, Lara Croft first climbed her way onto our screens. Dual pistols didn’t know what was coming for them! Flash forward to 2021, we are now toasting to the Tomb Raider 25 Year Celebration.

Publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics are taking the entirety of 2021 to celebrate the franchise. Each month, a different game in the Tomb Raider series is going to be put under the spotlight.

February kicked off the celebrations with the very first game. March focused on Tomb Raider II. Let’s recap everything that was announced in this month's celebration of Tomb Raider II and the wider impact that this 1997 title had on the franchise.

"Don't You Think You've Seen Enough?"

Following the soaring success of Tomb Raider in 1996, Core Design was ready and waiting to reveal Lara’s next adventure. Tomb Raider II follows Lara’s quest for the Dagger of Xian, fabled to hold the power of the dragon. Join our favourite adventurer through the mountain peaks of Tibet, the canals of Venice and the depths of the ocean.

The 21st of November in 1997 marked the release date for Tomb Raider II, only a year after Lara’s debut on the Playstation. Flash forward to 2021, get ready to embark on Tomb Raider II’s celebrations, including the big announcements from Square Enix Presents.

"Pardon Me if That Was Just Your Way of Trying the Doors for Me"

On March 18th, Square Enix Presents Spring 2021 took place and really stepped up the surprises. You can read the full article here as it was brilliantly covered by our own Paul Blyth.

The biggest announcement came in the form of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy becoming available to buy in the Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy. Not only does this bundle contain Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it also includes each definitive edition with extra tombs and content. From the shores of Yamatai to the mountains of Peru, rediscover Lara’s adventure now.

The remastered trilogy wasn’t the only announcement to come out of the event! There will be a Tomb Raider cookbook coming out later in the year thanks to Insight Editions. After inspiring fans to explore the world, the team have designed 40 recipes inspired by Lara’s passport.

"That Was Gunfire"

Similarly, Tomb Raider will be making a few special appearances to mark the 25th celebration. The biggest of these appearances is that of Fortnite. Our favourite adventurer is available in Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 6 and has multiple unlockable styles and gear to discover.

There are 3 versions of Lara available within Fortnite’s Battle Pass. Alongside classic Lara in her blue tank top and brown shorts, you’ll also be able to unlock Anniversary Lara from the 2007 remake of Tomb Raider and Survivor Lara from 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot.

You’ll be able to battle as your favourite Lara with her icon pistoles and pickaxe through the hallowed halls of Croft Manor. This is one you cannot miss!

"I'd be Indebted With Your Life"

Tomb Raider 25 is a roaring success with fans of the franchise, both new and old. Along with new announcements, Square Enix is taking time to celebrate each and every element of Lara’s second adventure. The celebration site hosts fan art galleries, cosplay guides, fan spotlights and an exploration into the cover of Tomb Raider II.

Next month, the focus will move toward 1998’s Tomb Raider III which added to Lara’s ever-growing passport.
