TICKET TO RIDE FRANCHISE
The Ticket to Ride games franchise is one of the most well-known board game collections in the world. The franchise has been designed by Alan R. Moon, an English designer who previously worked for Avalon Hill. Since its original launch in 2004, the Ticket To Ride franchise has gone on to win various awards including the Spiel des Jahres and International Gamers Award. There have been several standalone games in the series, including Europe, Nordic Countries and Rails & Sails. Alongside the standalone games, there are several map collections for players to add. These include maps of the United Kingdom, Africa and Switzerland. Alongside the board games, the Ticket To Ride franchise has also expanded into video games and a card game.
TICKET TO RIDE HISTORY
The original Ticket To Ride game was released by Days of Wonder in 2004. That year the game won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award, as well as the Origins Award for the Best Board Game of 2004. A decade later it was reported that the original game had sold more than three million copies. In 2005, Ticket To Ride: Europe was released. This took place on a map of Europe and introduced ferry and tunnel routes to the game. Various map collections have been released since then, as well as Ticket To Ride: Rails & Sails in 2016. This map included oceans and the introduction of ship routes and harbours. In 2017, Days of Wonder released American and European versions of 'First Journey'. These games have been simplified and are marketed toward for children aged six and above.
HOW TO PLAY
Ticket To Ride games are seen as the ultimate 'gateway game'. The aim in all of these board games is to claim railway routes across the country. The longer the route, the more points a player will receive. On a turn, a player will choose to draw a new card, claim a new route or receive additional Destination Tickets. The latter are cards which connect distant tickets, therefore providing you with more points. The player who builds the longest, continuous route will also claim more points.
In order to claim a route in Ticket To Ride, a player will need to play a set of cards equal to the number of spaces in that route. The routes are colour-coded, and you must use the train cards of the same colour. For example, a blue route must be claimed with a blue coloured train card. Once the route is claimed, you can place your trains on each section of the route. Some cities are connected by a double-route, but no one player can claim both routes to the same cities.
