Who Are The Thousand Sons?

The Thousand Sons were one of the OG Space Marine Legions created by the Emperor during the Great Crusade. Their Primarch, Magnus the Red, possessed immense psychic powers, and under his leadership, they became scholars and practitioners of psychic sorcery.

The Thousand Sons had a higher proportion of psykers (psychic individuals) within their ranks than most Space Marine Chapters. They embraced psychic abilities and saw them as a gift rather than a curse, using them for various purposes, including divination, communication, and warfare.

Unfortunately during the Horus Heresy, the Thousand Sons were betrayed by the Space Wolves (who themselves were misled into attacking) in the infamous “Razing of Prospero”. Fearing the potential corruption of their psychic abilities, the Emperor’s orders led to a brutal attack on the Thousand Sons’ homeworld, Prospero. This tragic event shattered the Legion and led many of its members to embrace Chaos in desperation.

The Thousand Sons fell under the influence of Tzeentch, the Chaos God of Change and Sorcery. Their quest for knowledge and power ultimately led them deeper into the clutches of Chaos. Many of their sorcerers mutated into monstrous forms, becoming the infamous Rubric Marines, while others retained their psychic abilities but were forever bound to Tzeentch.

What’s In The Box?

An imposing Infernal Master commands 5 Scarab Occult Terminators and 20 Tzaangors in this box. Terminators bring heavy firepower and armour, while the Tzaangors can move in quickly for some close combat.

It feels like the Thousand Sons have been done dirty with this box. The Infernal Master is great, with a good mix of psychic attacks at his disposal. The Scarab Terminators are a must in any Thousand Son army (frankly any army’s version of Terminators is a must). But the 20 Tzaangors feel like filler. They’re good in close combat, but will have a hard time getting into position without decent terrain to cover their advance. The box would’ve benefited better from having a Rubric Marine squad, they’re a much better all-rounder and can take more hits (well, they can at the time of writing - Games Workshop update squad rules regularly for more balanced gameplay).

Are They Difficult To Paint?

They’re a Chaos Space Marine faction so, in a word, yes. With this box not only do you have to contend with the intricate trim detailing. You also have a large number of daemons to paint. And if that wasn’t enough, the Thousand Sons have got a thing for the Egyptian aesthetic, so wear extravagant headdresses.

None of this is to say you shouldn’t paint them. I’m just warning you of the challenge ahead. They will look fantastic on the table and you’ll instantly gain respect from your peers for taking on the challenge this army provides.
