Sushi Go is a game we brought for it's cute artwork as much as the actual game itself. It looked like a fun, simple game to play that wouldn't take too much time to learn and would be one we could get plenty of other people to play. So let's grab our chopsticks and take a closer look!
Sushi Go! is card drafting game for 2-5 players and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to play. The game is recommended for ages 8+ and is published by Gamewright.
Playing Sushi Go!
The game begins with the deck being shuffled and the cards are then dealt according to how many players are in the game. With two players, 10 cards are dealt to each player, three players deal nine cards to each player, a four-player game deal eight cards to each player and in a five-player game deal seven cards to each player. The rest of the cards get placed face-down in the centre of the table. You will need a piece of paper and a pen for one player to keep the score.
The game consists of three rounds. At the start of each round, once the cards have been dealt, each player takes a card they want to keep and then place it face-down in front of them. Once all players have done this you all reveal your chosen card at the same time. Once you have revealed your cards, the remaining hand gets passed on to the player on your left and your chosen cards remain face-up in front of you.
Everyone picks up their new hand and the next turn begins with the smaller hand to chose from. This goes on until all the cards in the hand are played then you score each players' face up cards. You then discard those cards and deal a fresh round from the deck for a total of three rounds. Each round you are looking to make certain sets of sushi to maximise your points in the game. The player with the most points at the end of the three rounds is the winner!
Final Thoughts on Sushi Go!
This game is a lot of fun. Sushi Go! is a very quick game which makes it a good game to get people to the table and makes for a very welcome change to some of the heavier games that are out there. The game can be picked up and played quickly without the need for too much strategy. It is a great introductory game for those new to the idea of card drafting as it is very simple to teach and easy to pick up.
I have playing this game with a variety of different player numbers and player types. Sushi Go! is the most fun when you have more players. There is a greater level of excitement and fun because you are waiting to see what may or may not be in the other hands around the table. It is interesting to see what other people are collecting and weighing up whether to block someone else or maximise your own points. The only downside to this game is that I don't feel like it plays well with two players. even when you play it with a dummy third hand. It is much better with three or more players.
If you are looking for a light, fun and interesting card game to add to your collection then I highly recommend Sushi Go! You can have lots of fun playing it. As I have already mentioned, it isn't heavy or complicated so it is a nice easy game to get to the table for anyone who isn't into the heavier board games. I also like breaking this out as a game to finish off an evening of board games as it is a good light, quick game to end the evening on.
Another positive thing about Sushi Go! is that is an ideal game for sticking in your picnic basket and taking along with you to the park. It comes in a great little tin and doesn't require any effort to set-up. You can even pack it to play on the train. Everyone should have this on their board game shelf! It really is a great little game for all the family to play and I am so glad we brought it.
Now I find myself inexplicably craving unagi....... Salmon skin roll anyone?????
