This is not a game!!
Suppressed Memories is an add-on pack of tiles and figures for Mansions of Madness Second Edition. If you do not have that you cannot make use of this set. Also be aware that if you have the original First edition expansions, Forbidden Alchemy and Call of the wild, you won't need this expansion.
What do I get?
Inside a nicely sized box, you will find:
- 17, Yes Seventeen, Double-sided map tiles.
- Eight Investigators figures and Character cards.
- 15 Monsters and their relevant Monster cards.
- Second edition conversion kit.
Stories?
As you will no doubt be aware. Mansions of Madness Second Edition uses an app to “run” the adventure. Revealing rooms, suspects, monsters and more. The purchase of this Tile and Figure collection adds one more scenario, based on the original Call of the wild scenario from the first edition. This might not sound a lot but do not be fooled. Coming in at 4-6 hours long it is no five-minute wonder I can assure you.
In my most recent play of this scenario just as we hit 4 ½ hours my character went “loony tunes” and we lost the game. We were not even close to the end though. In fact, you do not know when your time is up. This helps to add to the tension and mystery as you try to deal with the return of Zebulon Whately and an attempt to interrupt a sinister happening in Dunwich. Racing around trying to stop occult enemies from carrying out their evil task.
Characters
As you would expect from Fantasy Flight Games, the characters have enticing backstories. They do not do clean-cut hero types. More realistic and believable characters with faults and secrets just waiting to unravel. The miniatures themselves are nice and of a similar standard to the base set quality. If you are the sort to be tempted by a little touch of paint these figures can really come to life then. Being able to display real character quickly and easily.
Monsters
Welcome to 15 new monsters and their miniatures. As expected from the Lovecraftian world these are not your normal run of the mill monsters. Starting off with the deluded and slightly obsessed cultists. Moving into Strange half-human figures and worm-like monsters. Ascending to a high with the terrifying Byakhee or the disturbing Night-gaunt.
Only the strongest will survive the encounters (there are worse, too disturbing to even describe by name). As with the character miniatures, these monster figures are of a nice enough standard but once again really come to life with a little splash of paint to bring out their true horror.
Converted
Not satisfied with one big additional story. The double-sided map tiles allow for a large variation in the actual story layout increasing replay value. Once you also add on the use of these tiles to further vary the base set stories you really start to see the value of this addition.
The publisher states “Combine the figures and map tiles in this collection with your Mansions of Madness Second Edition conversion kit to unlock alternate maps for your existing scenarios….. battling old terrors once again as you struggle to find the truth and maintain your sanity.” Which I think is a very apt description for this game addition.
Suppressed Memories Summary
If you already have Mansions of Madness Second Edition then this is a good value way of extending and increasing the replay-ability and life of the game. If you are just now buying the base game, then I would say it is not an essential straight away but should be definitely high on the “soon to be bought” Lists.
In actual fact Suppressed Memories would make a great value gift for an owner of the game. You can expect to get this add on for a lot less on Zatu which is a lot less than the cost of a lot of current games. Miniature figures, map tiles and a six-hour story is a great value start in my opinion. Even without the replay value of the extra variability.
