A journey Like No Other
Super Mario Odyssey is an exciting adventure that brings fresh ideas to the classic Mario games. At the start of the adventure, Princess Peach is yet again kidnapped by Bowser and Mario has to team up with a magical hat named Cappy, to save Princess Peach from Bowser who wants to marry her. The game introduces a new ability where you can throw Cappy to take control of different objects and enemies, which adds a creative twist to the usual Mario formula.
The game has vibrant open-world kingdoms, each with its own theme and set of challenges. This varies from the bustling streets of New Donk City to the dry Sand Kingdom, with each being packed with secrets to uncover. The game encourages exploration and rewards players for thinking outside the box.
The graphics will leave you Shell-shocked
The game has many different and beautifully designed worlds, each with its own theme and challenges. From the busy streets of New Donk City to the ancient Cascade Kingdom, every level is full of detail and creativity. The open-world design encourages exploration and rewards players with Power Moons for completing various tasks and puzzles. The game’s art style blends the charm of traditional Mario games with stunning, high-definition textures.
The graphics are bright and detailed, making each world come to life and the music is great, with catchy tunes that fit perfectly with the theme of each world. I found myself entranced with the graphics especially when being in the Lake Kingdom and Cloud Kingdom as they were so beautiful!
The game’s main story has a good level of difficulty without being too easy or hard, and since Mario now has infinite lives, dying has no consequences minus losing 10 coins, which makes the game much more suitable for newcomers as well!
Replay Value and Costumes:
The game has tons of replay value from being able to collect hundreds of Power Moons (for those that are completionists), secret areas to discover and costumes to unlock, there’s always something to do once you’ve beaten the game (or before beating the game!) It’s easy for beginners to enjoy but also offers depth for experienced players.
I found some of the costumes to be hilarious and most of the costumes were themed around the individual kingdoms that you explore throughout the adventure. The costumes were unlocked by collecting purple coins which is an added challenge to complete whilst playing the main storyline, with some of the costumes being unlocked with the amount of Power Moons you collect, making those that are completionists have a challenge on their hands as they have to collect Power Moons and purple coins!
Things I like Things I don’t like
Tons of platforming challenges
Overwhelming amount of power moons to collect
Using Cappy’s new ability
The nostalgia of Mario games
Strong multiplayer
Creative and imaginative worlds
The fun costumes you can get
Summary:
Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a must-play for anyone with a Nintendo Switch. It’s fun gameplay, beautiful worlds and endless charm makes it one of the best Mario games (and one of my favourites!) and a joy to play.
My favourite world to explore was New Donk City as I felt there was always something to find and hidden secrets like an RC car race and a jump-rope challenge are great additions. I always found it funny with the differing styles between New Donk City looking more realistic in comparison to the cartoony style of Mario.
There is just so much to do when the game is “over”, some of the fun moments are new unlockables that nod towards the past, to clever new implementations from an old friend and entirely new worlds.
