Square Enix Presents took place on March 18th. It kicked off with 8 minutes of delicious Outriders goodness. It was a mix of new scenes and some from the demo, a glimpse of evolved character powers, and some armour & weapons players can expect to get their grubby mitts on when the game launches on April 1st.
Tomb Raider
This was quickly followed up with a few more bits and pieces for Tomb Raider’s 25th Anniversary - Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics’ year-long celebration of all things Lara Croft. Something that our very own Beth is extremely excited about and has already covered the first couple of announcements.
Not only are all three titles of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy now available as one giant package called ‘The Survivor Trilogy’ but Lara has also popped up in Fornite, with a playable Croft Manor Creative level coming next week... I wonder if the butler is still in the freezer? Miss Croft is also heading to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and Final Fantasy Brave Exodus for special events.
There’s also an animated series from Netflix on the way, a sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider movie, a collector’s statue of Lara kicking a velociraptor in the face and a cookbook all in the pipeline.
Square Enix Updated
The presentation then moved onto mobile games. Just Cause Mobile is coming soon. Multiplayer Hitman Sniper Assassins from Square Enix Montreal is coming in 2021. And a bizarre Space Raiders AR in collaboration with Taito is on the way.
An Avengers update followed with a look at the latest addition to the roster - Hawkeye. Fans were treated quick look at the Avengers’ roadmap. It showed Tachyon Anomaly & Red Room Takeover are arriving in the spring and Project Omega & Wasteland Patrol coming later in the year. Finally, Black Panther: War for Wakanda brings T’Challa to the game later in 2021. Sadly there was no mention of everyone’s friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man this time around.
A trailer for Balan Wonderworld served as a reminder that the much-anticipated title from the people that brought us ‘NiGHTS into Dreams’ is out on March 28th.
Life is Strange
We were then hit with another big reveal! Life is Strange: True Colors - with a wonderful-looking new setting, cast and special power. Developed by Life is Strange: Before the Storm studio Deck Nine, it also features a crossover character from that game - D&D fan Steph. It’s due out on September 10th as a complete package rather than an episodic release schedule. The previous titles in the Life is Strange franchise are also getting remasters due later this year.
Project Athia
Square Enix Presents wrapped everything up with a look at PlayStation 5 timed-exclusive Project Athia - officially titled Forspoken. Ella Balinska, the actress behind main character Frey, introduced an exciting, albeit short, trailer. It’s due in 2022.
