A new year means new board games and in today's spotlight we take a look at the newly-released Robo Rally (2016 Edition) game! The 90's classic has been given a modern makeover and remains as popular today as it was all those years ago.
Let's find out a little bit more about this robot-fighting game....
The Game
The original Robo Rally was released all the way back in 1994 by Wizards of the Coast and was designed in the 80s by Richard Garfield. The 2016 version of the game is the third re-release, with the previous one being in 2005.
In the game itself you take control of robots in a automobile factory. In this 2016 version of Robo Rally there are six robots for you to choose from, each represented by an awesome miniature, including Twonky, Hulk x90, Hammer Bot, Smash Bot, Zoom Bot and Spin Bot!
After working all week to create amazing super-cars, Saturday nights are their time to shine! The factory now belongs to them and to celebrate they have a race of their own, around a dangerous circuit filled with lasers, pits, conveyor belts and crushers.
The aim is simple: be the first robot to reach the checkpoints in the correct order! Easier said than done of course, as the other robots will try anything to try and stop you from winning! You can upgrade your robots with new weapons, shoot your rivals or simply push past them!
Your movement within the game will depend on the program cards that are randomly dealt to you.
The 2016 version of Robo Rally differs from earlier editions of the game as this time players have their own deck of 20 cards - which means the cards no longer have priority numbers to decide who goes first. This honour now goes to the person sitting closest to the transmitter on the board.
The Publisher
Robo Rally (2016 Edition) has been published and released by Hasbro Gaming! Hasbro is one of the biggest toy and board game companies in the world and has several subsidiaries and brands within the company such as Wizards of the Coast, Boulder Media, PlaySkool and Tonka!
The company was created back in 1923 by three brothers called Herman, Hillel and Henry Hassenfeld and was originally called Hassenfeld Brothers. This version of Robo Rally is released under the Avalon Hill branding.
Other games in the Hasbro Games catalogue include Monopoly, Pie Face, Risk, Bop it and Trivial Pursuit.
The Designer
Robo Rally was designed and created by American game designer Richard Garfield - who is the great-great-grandson of former US President James A. Garfield. His great-uncle also created the paper-clip - What an interesting family tree that is!
It is said that Garfield designed his first game when he was just 13 and fell in love with games after playing Dungeons & Dragons.
Alongside Robo Rally, the other game that Garfield is most well-known for designing is the Magic: The Gathering card game. This is often considered to be the first modern collectable card game and has spawned many imitations since its release in 1993.
Other games of note include Netrunner, BattleTech, King of Tokyo, the Star Wars Trading Card Game and Filthy Rich.
