When the PlayStation 4 exclusive game Spider Man, by Insomniac games, was announced way back in 2017, it's fair to say it produced a lot of excitement. As memory serves, Spider Man games rarely disappoint as a franchise and often hit hard with gameplay. There's the canned statement of "actually feeling like Spider Man", but you honestly do! Flips, tricks, launches and limitless web slinging action combine to make an acrobatic spectacle of unseen levels of fun! With the announcement of the PlayStation 5, many games have followed it. Including on Spider Man: Miles Morales. Alongside boasting even more web-slinging action and a unique story, it also utilises the PS5's insane processing powers!
A Brief History Lesson
Spider Man: Miles Morales unsurprisingly follows the narrative of Miles Morales. If you aren't familiar with him as a character, here's a short history. He is Spider Man following his creation and appearances following 2011. His first official comic was Ultimate Comics: Spider Man which followed his humble-ish beginnings. Unlike his predecessors, he had little to no interest in being a hero initially. Any normal person would have cashed in, but modest Miles chose to shun his abilities. But no hero's roots are as simple as an epiphany, and it took some hardcore happenings for him to don the role of the masked web slinger!
What We Know
The game itself, like many other video game counterparts, may not be entirely true to the comics or Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anyone familiar with Marvel knows the “multiverse“ is often a quick explanation for there being four variants of a character. We do know that Peter Parker has taken a break from wearing the webbed suit and is no long acting as Spider-Man. However, Miles Morales isn't going to be the same hero as Peter. His powers differ for a start, along with his experience and personal narrative! The game does appear to follow on from the PS4 game, with the ending there giving way to Miles' story. How this develops is yet to be divulged.
Spider Man: Miles Morales is set a whole year after the events of its predecessor. This game has our heroic, new webhead rocking a sleek black and red spider suit. It's set in Harlem, Miles' place of residence, and centres around a conflict between an energy corporation and a army of technologically advanced gangs. We also know Miles has baggage and emotional troubles to overcome, with his life being quite eventful up until he began busting criminal activities. We're hoping this shows gradual character development and change, as a ready made hero would reduce the story's impact.
Why We're Excited
The legacy of the Spider Man games holds a strong narrative and great gameplay. The PlayStation 5 boasts 8K resolution support alongside a huge upgrade to its processing power. Insomniac Games have described this as a stand alone experience and "the next adventure in the Marvel's Spider-Man Universe". It hints at being smaller in scale, but delivering the same level of gameplay and engagement as the prior. Don't get us wrong, PlayStation 4's Spider Man blew us all away with its visuals, gameplay and its story. But if Sony's claims on their tech are to be believed, and Spider Man: Miles Morales delivers in the same way as its predecessor, we're in for a true gem of a game!
