Scythe, one the best games from 2016, is getting a brand-new expansion: Scythe: The Wind Gambit! This is huge news for the engine-building game, set in an alternate 1920’s era, as airships will be added - which will completely change the gameplay!
Scythe has already sold around 100 000 copies worldwide, a feat for such a new game, and has firmly placed itself on Board Game Geek’s ranking list of Most Popular Games of All Time- currently positioned at number six.
Scythe’s co-designer Jamey Stegmaier stated that the idea of an expansion blossomed from artwork by Jakub Rozalski, who had created mesmerising pieces based on an alternate turn-of-the-century Europe. The new airship concept originally came from Scythe’s Facebook Group where a rookie game designer, Kai Starck, wrote new rules and added in airship gameplay, before publishing the idea on the group. Stegmaier was so impressed that he recruited Starck and they began working together on perfecting the new airship component.
The expansion will introduce new game play with the addition of airships and “Resolution” cards which will add different ways for the game to end- an element of the game that fans have expressed changing due to its current sudden and surprising ending- this addition will give players a new unique element to work towards during the game.
The new changes that Scythe: The Wind Gambit bring are appropriate thematic elements that not only will make it move a bit faster but also bring new aspects to the gameplay, for example; the airships aren’t hindered by water which allows them to move through enemy territory, unless challenged by another airship, and increase a player’s range in the game.
The Wind Gambit has been play tested over 450 times with over 700 play-testers being involved and will be set for release at the end of 2017.
