It’s been 19 years since Ratchet and Clank (Playstation’s answer to Nintendo’s Banjo-Kazooie) was released on the Playstation 2. 16 Iterations, spin-off or remakes have been made since then and whilst most of them were enjoyable. Clank in Time and the original remake in particular! It's been a long time since I have been this hyped for the series. Enter Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart!
Back in 2002, so many awesome games were introduced to the Playstation. From Kingdom Hearts and Sly Copper to GTA: Vice City and Lord of The Rings: Two Towers, it is clear to see why Ratchet and Clank may have gone under peoples radar.
I am more than happy to see that this title seems to have a lot more momentum with the recent trailer release. Insomniac has expanded upon the game we all know and loved all those years ago. And if you only jumped on the series with the 2016 re-release, this looks like the perfect title to continue with.
What We Know!
If you’re unaware of Rift Apart or if you’re new to the franchise this is a game developed by Insomniac, the incredible minds that most recently and notably brought us Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel Miles Morales.
This is the first new title for several years and brings back the series most beloved evil genius Dr Nefarious. The usual Characters are also back with the trailer introducing a new female Lombax protagonist, Rivet.
When the Dr separates Ratchet and Clank through a dimensional portal, Ratchet begins his journey to find his best friend Clank. Clank in the meantime is picked up by Rivet who luckily seems to have the same grind my gears mentality with Dr Nefarious as Ratchet does. This game seems to be a lot more story-driven than it has been in the past whilst keeping the gameplay as wacky as ever.
What Does the Gameplay Bring?
Insomniac’s core weapon mechanics has always given such zany and comical feel to the gameplay. Using tools throughout the world, you can create tons of unique ways to take down enemies. Keeping it fresh and exciting.
Upgrading weapons has also been another delight in this franchise. The rewards that are given to you when modifying guns, captures you and makes you strive to upgrade everything you can and if you don’t, you do it on the next run.
The Armor and Weapons look just as quirky and outrageous. With new weapons such as the Burst Pistol, Topiary Sprinkler and the Shatterbomb it takes away the limiting feeling of not having Ratchets sidekick Clank by his side. Giving him new ways to take down foes that lie ahead.
But don’t worry, Clank seems to be in good hands with a new Lombax hero called Rivet. Whether she will be a reskinned version of Ratchet or have her own move set, her gameplay seemly uses clank a lot more, giving us the best of both worlds.
How Does it Look?
This brand new trailer truly shows off the Playstation 5’s next-gen graphics. Ratchet and Clank have always had the look and feel of a Pixar film. The cartoon characters along with the sci-fi environment combine to create a vibrant, kickass world which I can’t wait to explore. Even down to the fur on the Lombax, you can see Insomniac has gone all-in on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
