Description
Eat brains. Don't get shotgunned.
In Zombie Dice, you are a zombie. You want braaains – more brains than any of your zombie buddies. The 13 custom dice are your victims. Push your luck to eat their brains, but stop rolling before the shotgun blasts end your turn! Whoever collects 13 brains first wins. Each game takes 10 to 20 minutes and can be taught in a single round.
Each turn, you take three dice from the box and roll them. A brain symbol is worth one point at the end of the round, while footsteps allow you to reroll this particular dice. Shotgun blasts on the other hand are rather bad, cause if you collect three shotgun blasts during your turn, it is over for you and you get no points. After rolling three dice, you may decide if you want to score your current brain collection or if you want to push your luck by grabbing new dice so you have three again and roll once more.
Zombie Dice Horde Edition includes the Zombie Dice base game, as well as the Zombie Dice 2: Double Feature and Zombie Dice 3: School Bus expansions, along with a cloth bag and a scorepad to keep track of those tasty brains.
Zombie Dice is a fast paced, push your luck, dice game which can be played with 2 or more players. In this game, players will have 2 objectives – eat brains and don’t get shotgunned. With easy rules, a quick setup and simple mechanics anyone can play this game. The Horde edition includes all the expansions to make this the best Zombie rolling experience.
Braaaaains
Over the course of the game, players will want to eat the most brains. The first player to 13 or more brains will trigger the final turn. After, players will count their brains and the person with the most will win!
To collect brains, players will select 3 dice from the bag and roll them. They can roll brains, footprints or shotgun blasts. Once a player has rolled 3 dice, they can then continue rolling. Any shotgun blasts or brains are put to one side and footprints are rerolled. Players always roll 3 dice per turn so will draw the amount needed from the bag.
With 3 survivor types; green, yellow and red, eating brains isn’t always easy. Green survivors are the easiest to track down as they have more brains, yellow are balanced and red survivors have more shotgun blasts. Even though dice rolling is random, players may want to stop their turn if only red dice remain in the bag. Because the odds won’t be in their favour if they continue.
The base game is simple and after a few runs it can become a bit samey. Luckily, the Horde edition won’t put you in a samey slump.
Making An Action Movie
The Zombie Dice Horde edition includes both expansions. The first one, is the Double Feature. This expansion adds 3 new dice; the Hottie, the Hunk and Santa. These dice are interactable and mix up gameplay. The Hunk die is equipped with double brains but also double shotgun blasts which makes rolling him quite the gamble. The Hottie has more footprints than any other die so you may find she sticks around for a couple of rerolls. What makes these 2 unique is how they interact. If one of these dice has already been rolled and you’ve got a tasty brain, this can be taken away. This is taken away if you draw out the other dice and roll a shotgun. The Hunk or Hottie therefore rescue each other, and you lose a brain! Although, not disastrous, these dice do make you reconsider pushing your luck.
The best die in this Zombie Dice expansion is, Santa. This die delivers double brains and 2 new abilities. Santa can gift you an energy drink or the football helmet. The energy drink will convert all green footprints you roll into brains. Whereas the football helmet will protect you from an additional shotgun blast.
However, the Santa die does include a side with 1 brain. If you roll this, you are eating Santa’s brains! This does mean, if you draw the Hunk or Hottie and roll a shotgun, they will save Santa. This expansion adds depth to the base game and makes it more interesting after multiple plays.
Getting On The School Bus
The final expansion, the School Bus, is my favourite. This epic 12-sided dice is fun to roll and includes new actions which you can take during the game. After a player has rolled 3 dice, they can get on the school bus. Instead of rolling 3 more dice from the bag, they will roll the school bus die and then 2 more from the bag. The School Bus die, includes lots of different choices and chances to grab more brains. The new actions include the stop sign, yield, tyre tracks and dead end.
These add much more replayability and tension into the game. The theming of the die is also great and adds to the games table presence. Afterall, what is a zombie movie without a yellow American bus! It really turns this push your luck dice game into something special and into a game you will want to keep in your collection.
Final Thoughts
Zombie Dice Horde edition is the best version of Zombie Dice to buy. It has all the fun of the original and contains both expansions. On its own, the base game can become samey but the introduction of the Feature dice and the School Bus die give it a new lease of life. Nothing beats, picking up the massive 12-sided School Bus die and waiting in anticipation to see what you get!
I admit the theming isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you enjoy zombie movies, this game has all the tropes and feel of a classic 80’s zombie flic. If you have been eyeing up the game, this version is the one to get. The expansions aren’t easy to pick up on their own and I wouldn’t play this without them.
Zombie Dice is a push-your-luck game which can be played with 2 or more players. The Zombie Dice Horde edition includes the base game and the expansions which give you even more brains!
Setup
The setup for Zombie Dice is simple. Put all the dice into the bag and you are good to go. If you are playing the Double Feature variant with the Hunk, Hottie and Santa dice just remove 2 yellow and a green die from the bag.
Playing The Base Game
The aim of Zombie Dice is to collect the most brains as players are mindless zombies. Over the course of the game, players will draw 3 dice from the bag and roll them. All dice have 3 symbols; a brain, footprints and a shotgun blast. Once the dice have been rolled, players can continue to choose dice, up to 3, and roll them. During each turn, players need to maximise how many brains they are collecting. However, if a player rolls 3 shotgun blasts during their turn, they lose any brains they have collected, and their go is over. Finally, players can roll footprints. Footprints show that your prey has gotten away! If you choose to roll more dice, any footprint dice are added to the total to bring your roll up to 3.
Dice come in different colours; green, yellow, and red. These represent the survivor’s toughness. Green survivors have more brains, yellow have a balanced mix and red survivors have more shotguns. Knowing this informs your odds. If the bag has more red dice in it than green, you may want to stop rolling.
If players keep rolling dice and there are none left in the bag, dice are added back into the bag so they can continue.
Once a player gets 13 or more brains, every other player gets another turn. Brains are then added up and the person with the most wins!
Double Feature
To add more variation to Zombie Dice, the Horde edition includes the Double Feature expansion. In this expansion, players replace 2 yellow dice and a green die with the Hunk, Hottie and Santa dice. These unique dice interact with each other and provide new bonuses. The Santa die adds the energy drink power up and the football helmet. The energy drink turns green footprints into brains and the football helmet lets you take an extra shotgun blast that turn! Each player can only draw the Santa die once per turn.
The Hottie and Hunk dice are interactable and may deter you from pushing your luck. If you draw the Hottie and roll a brain, there is a chance this could be taken away. During your turn, if you also draw the Hunk and roll a shotgun blast, the Hunk will rescue the Hottie and you will lose her brains. This works the other way as well. Because these dice can save each other, it makes it risky to keep drawing and rolling dice from the bag. The Hunk dice also has double shotgun blasts!
The School Bus
Finally, the Zombie Dice Horde edition also includes the epic School Bus die. This large 12-sided die introduces 4 more actions into the game. After players have rolled their first 3 dice, they may declare, ‘I am getting on the school bus’. Instead of drawing 3 dice from the bag to roll, they will roll the school bus die and then another 2 dice to make it up to 3. Players will continue to roll this die as part of their selection until their turn ends, they fall off the bus, or they decide to jump off and chase some runners.
The School Bus die, includes lots of different choices and chances to grab more brains. The new actions include the stop sign, yield, tyre tracks and dead end. These actions mix up gameplay and provide the following new rules:
- Stop sign – When players role this, their turn immediately ends, and they score their brain count this turn.
- Yield – Any shotguns rolled in the same dice throw will turn into footprints.
- Tyre tracks – Players have fallen off the bus and cannot use the School Bus die for the rest of their turn. They must also give up a brain.
- Dead end – All runners this turn will become brains!
To keep track of the brains and shotgun blasts you accrue whilst rolling the School Bus die, the game includes tokens to help you keep score.
And that is how you play Zombie Dice Horde edition. So, grab your dice, chuck them in the bag, and get to rolling those brains! Just make sure you don’t push your luck too much or those shotgun blasts will leave you with nothing.
