Description

A frank, tenacious and tender drama about passion, adultery and greed in a changing Britain.

First shown on BBC One in 1989, Tony Marchant’s acutely observed mini-series explores the errors of empathy and the flipside of ambition in Thatcher’s Britain.

Tom (Keith Barron) is a middle-aged ex-toolmaker now scraping a living as a cab driver in the rapidly developing fictional Midlands town of Woodsleigh Abbots. His marriage to Liz (Annette Crosbie) is in a rut, and he falls for lonely young newlywed Kathy (Maggie O’Neill), after picking her up one evening in a state of distress.

Kathy’s controlling husband Martin (Reece Dinsdale) cares only about his career as a computer expert at Chinese-owned tech giant InfoCo, and Tom’s initial fatherly concern for Kathy as she opens up to him about her woes soon develops into obsessive passion on both sides. But there are always losers in a winner-takes-all world, and writer Tony Marchant (Holding On, Leaving) pulls no punches in this gripping tale of adultery, ambition and enveloping despair.
