What is Star Wars Unlimited

Spark of Rebellion is the first set from Star Wars Unlimited, the new Star Wars TCG from Fantasy Flight Games. There are now three sets available for the TCG, with a fourth arriving very soon. Spark of Rebellion sets the tone for the game, and the cards are based on characters and vehicles from across the original Star Wars trilogy but also drawing from the other films and wider canon. This is a trading card game, so think Magic the Gathering Pokemon or Lorcana, and this means a key part of the game is a booster of sealed random cards.

In Star Wars Unlimited, each player will build a deck which is usually made up of 50 cards, with a leader and a base, focussed primarily on heroism or villainy cards and then through selecting usually two of four different aspects from cunning, aggression, command or vigilance which are determined by your leader and base combination.

Take your opponents base down to zero health and you win the game, by deploying both ground and space units, playing events and even deploying your leader. It’s a simple to learn game but with a lot of strategic depth. Although each subsequent expansion has added additional mechanics that are not present in this first set that potentially add to that complexity.

What’s in each booster?

Every booster contains the same number of cards. You’ll get 16 cards, including 1 leader and 1 base. You’ll also always find 9 common cards, 3 uncommon cards, 1 rare or legendary card and 1 foil card which could be any rarity. You might be lucky enough to find a hyperspace or if you’re really lucky a showcase card.

Having collected the game through all three sets, I would say that this first set has some of the staple cards found across most of the competitive and fun decks in the game. It has some fantastic legendaries such as the Luke and Darth Vader units which are some of the best cards you can pull from any packs, as well as some gorgeous showcase cards. I really love the art style across the game, with a range of artists providing their take on iconic characters and moments in Star Wars.

Boosters are key to building new decks, although there is a two player starter set available for Spark of Rebellion featuring pre-built Luke and Vader decks, that are very balanced and a great introduction to the game if the boosters seem a little daunting.

Are they worth buying?

I’ve enjoyed Star Wars Unlimited at least as much as any other board game I’ve played over the past year and have over 50 games played. If I was to buy into one set of the game, Spark of Rebellion would be the one I would go for. It has some of the strongest leaders in the current meta of the game in Sabine, Iden and Han Solo (plus the now banned Boba Fett), and the strongest rare bases in Tarkintown and Energy Conversion Lab. The common and uncommon cards are used in so many decks, alongside some strong and integral rare and legendary cards that are some of the best the game has to offer. If you’re on the fence, I would buy a two player starter set, and there is one for the first three sets released but these can easily be supplemented and built upon using a few booster packs. As with any booster pack, the only downside is it can be a lottery as to what you get inside but I feel that Star Wars Unlimited has a long future ahead and is still going strong a year in.
