Description
In Pirate’s Cove players are competing to become famous pirates. Fame is acquired by burying plunder on Treasure Island, winning battles against other ships, and by visiting the tavern to tell tales of your exploits.
Players start off with a pirate ship and they assign stats to each of the four parts of their ship - sails, crew, guns and hold. The sails determine how fast the ship is. The faster ship will always go first in battle. The hold determines how much loot a ship can hold. The crew and guns determine how many dice the player will roll in combat.
The basic ship will not last long on the high seas so players need to seek upgrades to their ship. These are found on four of the islands on the main board. There is one island to upgrade each area of the ship. The other two islands on the board are the Tavern, where players obtain tavern cards and Treasure Island. Tavern cards may award fame or may help the player in battle. The pirates have to go to Treasure Island if they want to bury their loot and convert it into fame.
Each main island, apart from Treasure Island, also rewards players with loot.
At the start of each round players secretly decide which island they want to sail to. If more than one player has decided to visit an island there will be a battle. The first player to take one level of the opponent's ship down to zero, using dice rolls, wins and gains a reward. The other player must go to Pirate’s Cove to repair.
Additionally, there are legendary pirate ships which randomly patrol the waters in these parts. These are very powerful ships which can be difficult to defeat. But the rewards for defeating them can be huge.
At the end of the game the player with the most fame points wins.
