Ladies and gentlemen, may we introduce: Pictures, by PD-Verlag! This is none other than the Spiel des Jahres winner of 2020. Quite the impressive feat; there’s no higher accolade for family-weight board games. The Spiel des Jahres is an annual award given to the best family game of the year. Past winners include Ticket To Ride, Carcassonne, Catan and Azul. Pictures sits with superb company!

Can you make a swan out of shoelaces? What about a sunflower out of sticks and stones? That’s the challenge of Pictures! This is a 30-minute party game, with plenty of guessing and deduction involved. You build a 4x4 grid of 16 image cards (there’s a whole deck to shuffle and pick from). Then everyone gets given a set of apparatus. One of you has shoelaces. Another has color cubes, another icon cards, someone else has sticks and stones, and the last player has building blocks!

On your turn, you draw a secret token from a draw bag. On it are the coordinates that state which image you need to recreate, using your items. Then you need to get your creative juices flowing. You want the others to guess which of the 16 pictures you’re making! You get points for correct guesses, as do the people guessing.

Everyone gets a turn making pictures using their components. Then, you pass your bits clockwise. Phew, you no longer have to use the chunky building blocks… But now you’ve got the shoelaces! Pictures is a fast-paced, lightweight game that’s easy for the whole family to play. The rules are simple to teach and learn. And given the amount of possible pictures you can make, Pictures is sure to become your go-to party game!
