Heer’s The Thing

They say you learn something new every day, it’s what keeps us young. Well I’ve just learnt that Heer is the German word for its Army as a whole and not just the name of a Panzer Division. I thought in WWII it was the Wehrmacht but that was the term used for its overall forces. Wehrmacht meaning defence force a term used in a misbegotten attempt to rearm more than the Treaty of Versailles allowed. It comprised of the Kriegsmarine (navy), the Luftwaffe (Air Force) and the Heer (the Army). So now we know what the title means we can say that Heer Panzer Decals (Mid & Late) does exactly what it says on the tin! It provides 4 sheets of decals of numbers and insignia for German Armour in the latter half of WWII. There are 12 specific Division insignia plus sheets of numbers and crosses.

Heer They Are

The 12 Divisions offered are:

  • GD Grossdeutschland – France, Yugoslavia, Russia
  • 2nd Panzer – D-Day France, Ardennes
  • 3rd Panzer – Poland, Belgium, France, Russia
  • 4th Panzer – Poland, France, Russia
  • 11th Panzer – Yugoslavia, Russia, S. France
  • 12th Panzer – Russia
  • 19th Panzer – Russia
  • 20th Panzer – Russia
  • 21st Panzer – North Africa, D-day France, Russia
  • Panzer Lehr – D-Day France, Ardennes
  • 26th Panzer – France, Italy
  • HG Hermann Goring – France, N.Africa, Sicily

N.B. The 11th Panzer Division is incorrectly labelled on the decal sheet as the 10th. If the HG is the Hermann Goring Division the insignia is wrong. It might be something else but I couldn’t find anything matching that symbol given.

There are 26 insignia for each Division, 52 for the incorrectly labelled 11th.

There are 52 black Crosses

There are 52 white outline crosses

There are 28 of each number 1 to 4 in white

There are 24 of each number 5 to 8 in black (no 9s I hear you ask – Nein!)

There are 2 x double numbers in white : 00, 01, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45

There are 2 x double numbers in black : 00, 01, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45

I make that 780 decals in total.

It would have been nice to have some Wehrmacht number plates for my transport but there isn’t any.

Heer They Go

The decals work fine as you would expect. You cut them off the sheet (remember to remove the protective film) dip them in water and slide them off the backing paper into place on your model. I use Micro Set setting solution to soften them and help them set but this isn’t strictly necessary. The only issue is their tiny size, about 2mm across and I’ve got fat fingers, but that’s not their fault!

Overall a good value purchase to finish off your Battleground Flames of War vehicles. It’s a shame you don’t get decals included with your kits in the first place but you don’t, so get on with it and get these. I like these Heer Panzer Decals.
