Description
Same game mechanics as the original, but contains card art too horrible/incredible to include in a kid-friendly version
Includes 56 cards (2.5" x 3.5"), box, and instructions
Can be played by itself or combined with other decks to accommodate more players
Exploding Kittens is a party game which is noted for its incredible success on Kickstarter (almost $9m). It’s a Press your luck set collection game. Whereas other Press your Luck games end your turn, this can end the game. However, you start off with a gimme to let you continue and depending what cards you draw, allow you in See the Future, Skip your turn, make someone else play twice or Nope their action (among other abilities).
This particular version is the naughty older kitten (cat?) I have more commonly seen (even at work!). So if you draw an Exploding Kitten (there is one fewer of these than there are players) you are out of the game, unless you have a Defuse card or the other abilities. Last one left wins! The game usually takes 20 mins at most and is full of (light) tension, laughter and the potential kingmaker-ish knowledge that you have more than one defuse, perhaps even your opponents!
Exploding Kittens NSFW Thoughts
My wife bought Exploding Kittens NSFW based on the look of the game (not via KS). We played this before the original game (and have only played that version once). If you like a filler game for 2-4 players (works comfortably with all) I recommend this one. In fact we know nine people who bought this game having enjoyed playing this version.
I’ve played this in dining rooms, living rooms, pub tables and even the small airport tables near the check-in desk! As for the Not Safe for Work part of the game….it’s pretty mild (penises, nipples, etc compared to some of the descriptions in Unstable Unicorns, which unfortunately isn’t as fun).
The gaming theme and mechanics are good and I like the ‘Nope’ ability which has been mainstream in common language. The set collection and options of this are great. The tension as to when a kitten might explode really stays throughout the game, as does the relief when you get one, two, perhaps three or more defuse cards. The smugness when you know you have your opponent’s defuse and the power you could wield is like having a contactless massage.
Exploding Kittens NSFW is a game you will play a lot and is a great intro game with others (those waiting for a game can see what games everyone has and can enjoy spectating more than, say, a worker placement title). This is a game you can leave in your cupboard and rediscover a few months later as well. I found it has a convenient save mode when we were mid-game when guests came round and it was easy to face the cards a certain way to pick up another time.
We’ve since added the Imploding Kittens Deck (the Imploding Kitten is brilliant) and the Cat collar as well, which can be a little claustrophobic).
