Epic Encounters Local Legends – Owl Bear Encounter Preparation:

Get your lumber jack shirt, we are heading out into the woods; it is time to go on a bear hunt… an owl bear hunt. ‘Dave, wear your combat trousers and boots not the high heels and yes, um no, not those either.’

Owl Bear Encounter, designed to fit into the Local Legends Tavern Kit and DND 5th Edition compatible. This unit contains a full encounter booklet, one medium and one small unpainted miniature and illustrated battle map. The unit is designed to be a flexible encounter and can be played as a standalone adventure, necessary element along the way, or a side quest in a campaign. The Games Master (GM) will need to have to assess the players levels and pitch the difficulty but reading the full encounter booklet rather than scanned over will give the depth of the scenario and characters to make it a truly Epic Encounter.

Epic Encounters Local Legends – Owl Bear Encounter at play:

Owl Bear Encounter. The game is designed as a drop in encounter for any games master role playing game, primarily for the Local legends Tavern Kit but also for a DND 5th Edition adventure, modification would be needed to any other role-playing system. The players play co-operatively unless you are a sneaky spy, to complete the scenario objective. The scenario is outlined to stop the Owl Bear from further killings of the local residence but not just hunters but scholars of magic too, but a band of plucky adventurers could save the day, or they might of course run for the hills as this isn’t no standard owl bear, it’s clever, sets traps and knows magic. The GM manages the encounter, so if it is too challenging the scenario can be adjusted e.g. the Owl Bear has to be stopped by brute force so maybe some extra muscle from the local hunters would help tip the balance or if your team are a little OP the owlbear can summon help too.

Booklets, Maps & Miniatures:

Owl Bear Encounter booklet contains, a detailed scenario and background of the Owl Bear and abilities and behaviour in battle or play, as well as the Owl Bear’s perspective on what it needs and what outcomes could be. The booklet provides guidance on difficulty, stats, and background from the Nodding Dragon. The battle map is beautifully illustrated and on decent quality paper but is only one sided and you will need to flatten it out and then rely on the Tavern Kit to provide a leading foreground map for the adventure. The Owl Bear and druid miniatures are included and are all unpainted and unprimed but are very nicely detailed. The pieces are standard medium & small miniatures in size but is more detailed compared to the Night Hag encounter sprites.

‘So does an owl bear regurgitate the undigestible parts or just is it a straight through affair, oh and does I fly?’ asked the young Paladin blushing slightly but full of excitement.

‘So polite terminology, you’ve done a great job there Mr Wizard’ advised the Barista.

‘Owl bears regurgitate the un-digestible elements much like an owl but are too heavy to fly but can use their feathers to extend jumping and slow their decent, so are great as an ambush predator,’ said the white Wizard.

‘Do owl bears lay eggs or give birth to live young’ asked the young Paladin.

‘Um that’s a good question I am uncertain about that one my lad’ replied the White Wizard

‘Ha, well you won’t find out from our specimen, as ‘he’ is incapable of either, so we don’t know if they have an egg tooth either’ chuckled the Barista.

Epic encounters have been written to be challenging and it is the duty of the GM to balance the adventure with the player ability and bringing in extra help to tip the balance is allowed as you are in charge right, but balancing is always the best way and letting in extra help or allow aid to come if needed for either your team or the owl bear.
