Amass primate power as the MonkeyBot Prime
Or stir up a paw full of trouble as the devious cat Whiskers
But beware: the ravenous hydra Hexavultus won’t give up his treasures easily...
Box party
You are getting so much in this expansion that the best way to describe it is like a party in a box.
127 cards which includes 35 new dungeon cards, more mercenary, explore and secret tomes, two regular starting decks (for fifth and sixth players), and 6 unique starting decks. 60 Clank! cubes for the fifth and sixth players. 6 new player pawns (the cat one is mine), a new boss meeple (3 headed dragon), a side board for when playing with 5 or 6 players, a new market board, 5 artifacts, more gold, 1 backpack, 1 crown, 1 master key, 3 invincibility cloaks, 2 mastery tokens, 18 minor secrets, 6 character boards and lots of unique tokens for the characters.
The rules are very comprehensive and include full details of how to set the game up for a 5 or 6 player experience. There are not that many differences and you can easily be ready to go in just a few minutes by following the rule book.
Included with this expansion is a new minor secret called ‘Potion of Stealth’. When used you remove one of your Clank! cubes from the board and instead add one for each of your opponents.
A new market item is available which is an ‘Invisibility Cloak’ which allows you to pass through tunnels whilst ignoring any monsters that are there. It is also worth five points at the end of the game.
Party Invitation
Some of the cards included have two new rules that you need to get used to:-
React. These cards allow you to participate during someone else’s turn. When the conditions are met you announce that you are reacting (and describe what it is you are reacting to) and then carry out the instructions of the card. So it could be you are reacting to a monster arriving in the dungeon row which allows you to remove 2 Clank! cubes. When you use the react power you leave the card in front of you until your next turn when the card is added to your cards played this turn. You can hold back and then react later in that players turn and if a react causes you to draw a card you can use any react powers on the new card as well. The react action does not apply during your own turn.
Arrive Choice. These new cards present options to all of the players when they arrive in the dungeon row. Sometimes it will be a choice of spending gold for a benefit which you can refuse or sometimes it will be a choice between two options, at which point every player must choose one of the options but they don’t have to be the same as each other.
It’s My Party And I Will Bring Unique Powers If I Want To
The final inclusion in this expansion is the unique player starting decks and asymmetrical powers. These are an amazing inclusion and one that I will always play with regardless of the map I am using. Each character power / deck feels unique and gives you more ways of playing this fantastic game. Once again the rule book goes into great detail of how each character plays and also a lovely bit of flavour text about them. My favourite is Whiskers (the cat) who happens to be a professional thief (cat burglar get it). He can also cause a monster attack during his turn that will not affect him, how sneaky.
P-A-R-T-WHY. Because I Gotta
I now own all of the expansions for the original Clank! and this falls into the essential list for me. It adds extra players but not too much time (plus the react cards keep you involved). It also provides new items for the market and a minor secret which I really like. The icing on the cake (keeping with the party analogy) is the player decks and the powers. This adds so much to Clank! that I couldn’t imagine playing without them. The only negative for this expansion is the fact that there isn’t a new map.
So go put on your best party outfit and get Clanking.
