Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon) and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendon) are incarcerated in adjoining cells after their involvement in several murders from 1969 when newly graduated Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is assigned with running adult education classes.
