Osprey games have announced a sequel to the excellent compact 2-player game General Orders: World War II by David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin. It is called General Orders: Sengoku Jidai. Scheduled for release 18th September 2025.
This time we leave the battle grounds of the 1940’s to go back to the Sengoku period of 16th century feudal Japan. A time of warring states – Sengoku Jidai literally means Warring States period – saw an almost continual series of civil wars and social upheavals where the old order was being challenged. Whilst the Emporer of Japan was the titular ruler of every state, in practice the country was run by the Shogun, essentially a military dictator, and beneath him Samurai and regional Daimyo.
When this order broke down after a particularly devastating civil war the Daimyo or feudal Lords competed against each other for control of the regions of Japan. It is this complex arena that Thompson and Benjamin have condensed into a tight, turn-based, tactical struggle marrying the depth of a full wargame with the abstract symbology of chess.
Their publicity states “Deploy your commanders to seize powerful advantages, secure valuable supply lines, and capture well-defended forts, whilst protecting your vulnerable HQ. This thrilling stand-alone game also introduces new strategic waterways, ships and devastating siege weaponry across two battle maps.”
General Orders: World War II was a game of great depth yet being easy to play and complete in the 30 minute time scale claimed. Let’s see if they can achieve the same in feudal Japan.
