News: Twilight Imperium Roll And Write

Twilight Imperium
Twilight Imperium
It is 25 years since one of board gaming's most notorious cardboard and plastic arenas first appeared - Twilight Imperium. I say notorious as it often talked of in revered or reviled tones due to the fact that it takes a whole day to play.
To celebrate Twilight Imperium's quarter century, Fantasy Flight Games have announced that they will be releasing Twilight Inscription. A Roll and Write based on and in the Twilight Imperium universe. It is, however, no ordinary Roll and Write. Chris Gerber, head of FFG studios has stated that "Twilight Inscription is to Roll and Writes what Twilight Imperium is to board games. Make some room, you're gonna need it."
James Kniffen, the designer of Twilight Inscription, admitted in an interview that the idea started out as 'a joke'. But the more he thought about it, the more it began to make sense. He has been collaborating with original designer Dane Beltrami in its creation so it will be an authentic Twilight Imperium experience. Albeit one experienced through pen and pad rather than huge amounts of plastic. ("I wrote the book for Prophecy of Kings, so he owes me," says James)
That said, it will not be just one pad being used in this game. At this moment, each player will have at least four sheets to inscribe. Covering the four elements of Twilight Imperium - explore, exploit, expand and exterminate. Preliminary images suggest that it will be even bigger than the epic Hadrian's Wall, which is possibly the gold standard of Roll and Writes at this time.
Though the existence of a Twilight Imperium Roll and Write has been rumoured since 2019, the announcement is being met with mixed responses. Some believe it to be a ridiculous idea and going as far as to suggest that the announcement has been made '20 days too late', and others saying that this will bring a whole new set of players into the gravity well of Mecato Rex. Whatever the outcome of this release, one thing is for certain.
We're gonna need a bigger table.
