News – Empires of the North – The Wrath of the Lighthouse

The Wrath of the Lighthouse

Empires of the North is the next interaction in the Imperial Settlers universe. It shares some of the same core DNA as Imperial Settlers but with a few interesting and different twists. Each player selects a faction with a pre-built deck with each faction having a unique playstyle. It features hand management, resource, management and tableau engine building mechanisms and I for one love this game. I think it is especially great for two players and as a solo game. It has been well supported by Portal games with new clans such as the Romans, Japanese and Barbarians released so far.

Looking at the solo game specifically the game comes with some set scenarios that you can play with any of the factions. You have a set score to achieve and with a few minor exceptions, plays very similar to the multiplayer game. It is quick, satisfying and each scenario has some interesting twists.

Portal games have recently announced “The Wrath of the Lighthouse”. A solo only campaign that contains 15 unique solo scenarios to be played in chronological order. The campaign adds new types of cards. This includes event cards, legacy locations and Lighthouse cards. Those will get shuffled into the island decks.

More scenarios in itself are exciting to add more variability and replayability to an already fantastic solo game. On top of that, the legacy cards sound interesting as they carry over from game to game. It would be interesting to see if this is re-settable (I imagine it probably is) as the campaign book comes with 50 story branches. This is very intriguing as it implies that the choices you make could have an impact on the outcome of the campaign and if you play it again you could have a different experience. I am eagerly anticipating the release of this and getting it played.

Thoughts

Empires of the North is not currently short of content. From someone who has everything released so far, The Wrath of the Lighthouse is an instant buy for me. I love the idea of this story campaign for the solo mode. Tie that in with the many factions released so far, the future is looking very bright for Empires of the North.
