NEWS: A Wayfarer’s Tale: The Journey Begins

wayfarer's tale

What we’ve got here is a cover star.

If you read Tabletop Gaming Magazine, then you will already be well aware of this little cracker. If you don’t… Come on, get to it. There’s a lot of games either released or on their way to release each month, so making your way onto the cover in a busy market is no mean feat. There is, of course, plenty more information there, but we’ll cover the main points here: after all, this is a product worth paying attention to. It’s from designer James Emmerson, whose previous release was card game Tranquility, and artist Tristam Rossin.

From Wayfarer Games, Journey is a 1-4 player game of adventure and discovery. Players navigate their own individual maps, collecting treasure and avoiding monsters as they explore new locations.

Turns are taken simultaneously as players chart their own course over 45-60 mins, racing to discover new worlds.

Journey has been completely revised and expanded with new illustrations, enhanced mechanics, special quests, mysterious new companions, and lots more!

This sounds and looks like it’s going to be all action. The solo game will be tons of fun - you’ll be able to immerse yourself completely in this world for an hour, exploring the map and getting into all kinds of trouble. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be role-playing your character pretty hard. The multiplayer aspect of the game will have stacks of tension. You’ll all play from a shared pool of dice, and with no downtime between turns you’d best ensure that you’re paying attention.

Combinations of dice rolls will activate companions, who you’ll need to help you traverse the various terrains. You’ll place these dice on your companion’s sheet to trigger their individual skills, so you’ve got a lot of important decisions to make, and you need to figure out how best to employ your companions.

The original version of A Wayfarer’s Tale was a roaring success on Kickstarter and was actually a print and play game - you download the digital files, print it at home, and away you go. Such was the quality of the game that it was actually runner up in Golden Geek’s best print and play award for 2023.

This, of course, will be a thoroughly upgraded Big Box version, with top-quality linen-finished cards, acrylic standees, resin cubes, marbleized dice, wooden tokens, and double-layer player boards. It’s a big upgrade. No doubt the original print and play version had lovely artwork, but it can’t compare to the tactile additions this edition brings.

If you’ve already played the original, then you’ll know this is a must. If you haven’t, then this brand new edition is the perfect time to jump in.

And if you visit the Wayfarer Games website you’ll also be able to download a taster version of the full game, called The Lonely Isle, just to get you in the mood: A Wayfarer's Tale | Wayfarer Games - Family Strategy Board Games
