It’s the GenCon hangover in this week's news round-up, but there are still a few gems including Legacy Machi Koro, 40k Munchkin and a Star Wars ship the size of a cat.
Machi Koro going Legacy
If you’d asked your scribe to name the next game legacy guru Rob Daviau would be working his magic on… it would have taken days to say Machi Koro. But it’s happening as Machi Joro Legacy is coming spring 2019. The roll dice/collect coins/buy property mechanic remains, but a 10 game campaign has been added with plenty of tweaks to tie the two closely together.
Creator Masao Suganuma is co-designing with Daviau, as is the chap behind the updated Fireball Island and Nobuaki Takerube, an RPG writer. Equally importantly, the original artist is back to keep the feeling. If you’re worried about environmental factors, the legacy campaign doesn’t end the game’s usefulness: you can still play it after.
Horizon Zero Dawn: Canon Board Game
Horizon Zero Dawn is a Playstation 4 exclusive, so you’ll have to forgive the fact I’ve never seen it… but it’s coming to the tabletop in an adaption by Steamforged. They’ve got video to board experience thanks to Dark Souls and Resident Evil 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn is a co-op that sees you hunting sci-fi monsters. What’s most interesting is that the events of the tabletop game take place after those of the video game: yes, the board game is canon, and was in development before the PS4 edition was even released. There will be both miniatures and a Kickstarter.
40K Munchkin
If you thought Warhammer 40,000 Monopoly was pushing Games Workshop’s new love of licensing to the extremes hold tight: there’s going to be a 40k Munchkin. In a sense this frees us up, allowing us to live our lives knowing one day everything will have been in Munchkin and we’ll be praying to… sorry, sorry back to the news. The base set lets you play as Ultramarines, Necrons, Aeldaris, Orks, Death Guard or Tyranids and two expansions are planned. John Kovalic has given his twist to the familiar 40k images and it will be out to terrorize 2019.
Star Wars Armada gets Two Foot Long Ship
Star Wars Armada is getting a new expansion, and yes, it’s a two foot long ship. We’re not kidding, the Super Star Destroyer is genuinely 24 inches long and has rules to match its domination of your tabletop. Its appearance heralds a new class of craft for the game, with the invented in ten minutes before the pub name ‘Huge Ships’. You can put Emperor Palpatine on it too, should you really want to bring the dark side. It’s $200.
Restoration Games to Unleash Dark Tower
After the success of Fireball Island, Restoration Games after announced the next target of their necromancy: Dark Tower. This 80s hit saw a group of players trying to vanquish the inhabitants of the titular Tower which sat at the centre of the board, but it was notable for having some built-in electronics which tracked progress and did rolls. Now Legacy lord Rob Daviau, Gloomhaven’s Isaac Childres and others will be producing an updated co-operative version called Return to Dark Tower. Design is ongoing, but the Kickstarter is planned for 2019.
Clank: Expeditions
Clank! is getting a new expansion series subtitled Expeditions. The first pack, Gold and Silk, comes with a double sided board, tokens, markers and some flavoursome meeples, all in a smallish package. One side is the Spider Queen’s Lair and the other involves Dwarven Mining. And hopefully Balrogs.
