My Christmas Board Game Wishlist 2024 – David Board

All I want for Christmas is… Cthulhu Death May Die

Perhaps not the most festive theme for a board game but this is something that has piqued my interest for a while. The idea of working with others to battle the elder gods whilst maintaining just enough sanity to survive sounds like an amazing experience to share with friends and family.

The H. P. Lovecraft mythos is a fascinating world full of nightmarish creatures beyond the imagination of most people. The idea of monsters so horrific that they cause instant insanity, creates a certain morbid curiosity. Combine this with the supernatural lore that weaves through the tales of terror and you have a theme that is hard to turn away from, no matter how hard you try. As a fan of both Mansions of Madness and Arkham Horror the Card game, I was immediately drawn to Cthulhu Death May Die. A cooperative dungeon crawler that mixes insane dice rolls with horrific miniatures and epic battles sounds like the perfect combination for memorable gaming moments. This game seems to be dripping with theme, nail-biting turns and tense exploration.

One of the most interesting mechanics in the game is the insanity track. When you roll the dice, there is a chance that you roll insanity symbols. For each one rolled, you move up the insanity track on your board. There is a benefit to this. As you move up the track, you unlock special abilities for your character. However, if you reach the end, then you’re out of the game. This creates an interesting balancing act that fits the theme of the game so well.

Cthulhu Death May Die is a big game with oversized miniatures and huge dice rolls. It sounds crass and over the top – which it is – but it also contains compelling stories, clever strategy and interesting decisions all wrapped up in an enthralling, horrific universe. What better way to spend Christmas with the family.
