Miniatures of the Month – November

miniatures of the month logo

Remember remember the month of November, Assassins, Frost Giants and Sith.

That worked right? Ah well. Yes we’re back for another Miniatures of the Month. Things have been quieter of late. Our bloggers are slowing down for Christmas and preparing to make merry. That doesn’t mean we have nothing to show however, we can’t stop chipping away at those piles of shame! They haunt us you know.

Darth Vader (SW: Shatterpoint) by Sam de Smith

This month I decided to play about with some techniques for Darth Vader for Shatterpoint; I knew that what I DIDN'T want to do was use any black on the model. I started with a dark grey Colour Forge primer, then started steadily drybrushing layers of Vallejo Game Color Stonewall Grey, Wolf Grey and on the front facing surfaces Arctic white, and the Lightsaber itself.

Then, the front facing surfaces and the light sabre were given a thin coat of Gore Red - then wiping most of it off the saber with two fingers, run up the blade. The whole model was then washed with GW druchi Violet, and the "shadowed" surfaces with two more coats Drakenhoff Nightshade, before hitting the red sections with slightly thinned Scarlet Red. All in all, reckon he turned out rather well. The power of the dark side!

Frost Atronach & Sd.Kfz 251/10 ausf D (Elder Scrolls wargame & Bolt Action) by Hasvik

This month I have been working through some small projects to chip away at that pile of shame, definitely not in the hopes I will be getting something to top it back up again on the 25th…The results of which are I have ended up with two miniatures with more contrast between them than a Games Workshop technicals paint range.

First up we have a cool Frost Atronach for the Elder Scrolls wargame simply because I have always wanted to paint something icy. Tis the season after all. This was super simple; I primed in Vallejo White then slapped it all over with some Cloudburst Blue speedpaint. Next it was a simple case of dry brushing my way up through lighter blues until I was almost back to white. To cap it off I sprinkled on some fake snow and lathered him in so much gloss he became a nightmare to photograph. Sorry, not sorry.

Second, we are off to the sweltering deserts of North Afrika with a (double checks the name on the box) Sd.Kfz 251/10 ausf D (3.7mm Pak) Half Track, apparently, for my Bolt Action Deutsche Afrika Korps force. Alright, alright, technically these were late war and came about long after the Germans had left North Africa but all my Germans are desert themed and I wanted a half track with a silly big gun on it. I’m also not painting an entire second German force a slightly different colour so I can have all the weird vehicles they were messing around with late in the war. That way madness lies. If anyone asks, they are defending a beach in Germany somewhere. This was another relatively simple scheme and if you are interested I describe the process fully in a previous article. Merry Christmas all and remember if the family gets too much on the big day then you are an adult and you can just barricade yourself upstairs to continue assembling your Skaventide box until puds is ready.

Black Widow (MCP) by Ross Coulbeck

Time for another MCP model. I’m trying to work my way through them steadily, but they are all fun to paint so to be honest I’m not rushing, I’m just enjoying the experience. Black Widow is a classic character I’m sure we’ve all heard of. A deadly assassin who does a great job keeping up when surrounded by superheroes.

Her paint scheme isn’t complicated, given her preference for black, but I still managed to make a few things pop. The suit is my favourite Basilicanum Grey, just a heavy coat of it. That way it looks black but still highlights the edges and grooves. I made sure to leave spaces on her batons to add some Frostheart contrast to make them look electric. Her fair is really the standout feature, the fiery Blood Angels Red contrasting with her black suit, it looks really nice. Her belt is Balthazar Gold, a running favourite at the moment, and then I kept her face simple with Kislev Flesh and Reikland Fleshshade.

Ultron’s poor unfortunate drone is almost entirely Leadbelcher and a lot of Nuln Oil, which works fine. I added a dash of red for the eyes and fires just to make things stand out. And…ok so there is a pool of ‘oil’ on the base. It looks kinda cool, given that it’s a mistake and totally shouldn’t be red, but then why can’t oil be read. I was messing with base colours and made a splodge. Thankfully the location being directly beneath the break gave me an out. One day I’ll stop messing up the concrete base look...but it is not this day!
