Miniatures Of The Month – February 2025

Hello again and welcome back to Miniatures of the Month. So, it’s February and you have to be honest…how many hobby resolutions have you given up on already? You’re likely doing better than me. I decided to start one new fun army I could do lots of conversions for…which quickly expanded to 2 that are linked, then possibly 3, and now 4 because I got an urge to paint an army I used to collect and sold off. Sigh. Which does mean I don’t have anything painted this month, been having too much fun building, but I’ll try and get something done soon…ish. Let’s see what everyone else has been up to.

Panzer III (Bolt Action) by Hasvik Lucas

Would you believe it, I have painted yet another tank. With the third edition of Bolt Action allowing for lots more armour in your list I am still playing catch up. Please allow me to introduce you to my Panzer III AKA Ol’ Reliable. One of the most well costed all round battle buggies in the game in my opinion. Quick blast of the Dunkelgelb, stress over the placement of some decals, sponge on some browns and metallics then give it a filthy sepia wash all over. Bonus points for a blast of brown speed paint round the bottom - Done! All in she took less than an hour to paint to tabletop standard - God bless airbrushes. Now as is tradition I get to watch it blasted off the table on turn one of its first game. As is the way of the freshly painted curse. Join us next time when I promise that I will be painting something with eyeballs.

Characters in a tavern (Blacklist Fantasy Minis Series 1) by Neil Parker

This month I’ve been painting a few miniatures for characters in a tavern, for a RPG campaign I’m running currently. The miniatures are from the Blacklist Games Fantasy Series 1 set and the paint I use are almost all Vallejo and Citadel.

I started with the Barman. This figure is painted with a limited range of colours to create an authentic look, so mostly leather and linen. This was quite enjoyable to paint and I used slight variations to the painting scheme with Vallejo’s range of leather browns and I used Citadel’s Screaming Skull and Ushabti Bone to create the cream linen and cloth variations. I used flesh and earth shades for the details and a lighter shade of creams and browns for highlighting.

The three adventurer figures have a little more character, but again to create an authentic look, I used leathers and linen colours where relevant and then used Bloody Red for the fighter type and Royal Blue for the scholarly type. For the rogue figure, I started with a dark grey and added lighter shades. Then for all figures I used various shades to bring out detail and highlighting to add depth and create a worn look.

I also used a little grass to the bases of the adventurers so they can look like they are out and about as well as adding a little variation in the colour.

MOFF GIDEON

Moff Gideon (Shatterpoint) by Sam de Smith

I wonder, in some ways, if I have made a rod for my own back in recent years by keeping score / doing a self imposed 365 challenge. I was not feeling in the mood to paint and so for most of month...didn't. But funnily enough, not painting gave me a burst of end of month energy.

Moff Gideon, along with Death Trooper Sergeant and Dark Troopers. I used these guys to play around with a different black recipe: prime grey, VJ Model Air Nato black - which is really an ultra matt, thin, very Dark grey - vj Wash effects black and then vj gloss black inside the panels. Whilst I wouldn't necessarily use it for all things I think it works here.

For the reds, I again used Vj model color (the model color is generally higher pigment density than the game color range, though with similar if slightly lower flow), using just Vj Red wet blended into Vj Scarlet, and a little Flat Flesh to highlight.

Speaking of Flesh, I simply used VJ Model Air Mahogany, blended with a little flat Flesh for those highlights.

For the Darksaber I used Vj MC Gloss white which is SUPER bright and a Gloss varnish.

Ironically, Gideon is a bit meh and the Death Trooper Serg is situationally useful.

The Dark Troopers are amongst the best supports in the game. Still, good to get my head back in the game!
