Atomic Mass Games’ Marvel Crisis Protocol miniatures game features some of the best sculpted models around. It’s always fun to paint a tiny version of one of your favourite superheroes (or villains) and I’ve put together this guide for painting the Ursa Major & Red Guardian box (using Citadel paints, unless specified otherwise).
Bear With Me
Mikhail Ursus, a special agent for the Russian government, is able to transform into the enormous brown bear Ursa Major. This model gives hobbyists a great opportunity to practice painting fur. After priming with a light grey spray, I applied a basecoat of Rhinox Hide to the whole model. Then I covered everywhere but the darkest recesses with Mournfang Brown, and I then used XV-88 over all of the main areas. I highlighted Ursa Major’s fur with Balor Brown and added in small amounts of Screaming Skull to create the top highlight colours. I used a mix of 3:1 Balor Brown + Screaming Skull, followed by 2:1. You can use the drybrush method to quickly get your model looking tabletop-ready, or highlight the individual furs if you want to spend some extra time on it. As a final step, I glazed the whole model with Aggaros Dunes contrast paint thinned with Lahmian Medium to tie it all together.
After painting all the fur, your model is nearly finished! I picked out this cuddly bear’s sharp claws with Abaddon Black and then highlighted them with Eshin Grey, followed by Stormvermin Fur. For his teeth, I used Deepkin Flesh and then Pallid Wych Flesh. I painted the eyes with Averland Sunset, and finally the tongue using Screamer Pink and Pink Horror.
Red Dead Redemption
Nikolai Krylenko is the Red Guardian, a superhuman born in Russia who wields a modified vibranium shield and is able to withstand nearly all electromagnetic, kinetic, and gravitronic energy. His outfit is mainly red and white so this model can be painted quite quickly after priming with my usual light grey spray. For the face, I applied a basecoat of Bugman’s Glow and then highlighted the cheekbones, nose and middle of the chin with progressively smaller amounts of Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flesh, and finally Wraithbone.
All of the red parts of the model were basecoated with Khorne Red. I then highlighted these parts using Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet, going up to Wild Rider Red for the edges. For the white areas, I started with Grey Seer and then covered it all with Corax White. I applied a coat of Apothecary White contrast paint to pick out the shadows and then highlight the raised parts using White Scar.
I hope you’ll join me again for another painting guide in the future. Message us on social media @ZatuGames to show us your painted Marvel Crisis Protocol miniatures - we’d love to see what you’ve been working on!
