Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) are well-known for living card games (LCG). Popular examples Legend of the Five Rings, Arkham Horror, The Lord of the Rings and A Game of Thrones. Now, they're adding to their LCG portfolio. During their Gen Con In-Flight Report, FFG revealed Marvel Champions: The Card Game.
Marvel Champions
Marvel Champions is a co-operative living card game, set in the Marvel Universe. It's a game for one to four players. Players become iconic heroes from the Marvel Universe and take on the big bad villains. There are some fantastic characters within the game. Heroes include the likes of:
- Captain Marvel.
- Daredevil.
- Iron Man.
- Spider Man.
- Black Panther.
- She-Hulk.
They'll be battling villains such as Rhino, Klaw and Ultron.
In Marvel Champions players will select a hero, a scenario, a villain to face off against and a scheme. The combinations of hero, villains, scenarios and schemes will give players a different challenge and experience with each game. Each villain has their own unique encounter deck, full of minions and dirty tricks that will try to thwart you at every opportunity. The heroes have a customisable deck of 40-50 cards with their own unique powers, tools and allies to aid them in their struggle to victory.
Players will be able to play ally, upgrade, event or support cards, at a cost (usually by discarding other cards in your hand). Each hero has a double-sided character card with their alter-ego on one side and their hero on the other. Each side does different things and has different powers and abilities. This gives a player more options and strategies to discover.
Future Expansions
Marvel Champions LCG will undoubtedly be expanded upon. In fact, FFG are already talking about new expansions coming out every month. With an LCG you always know what card you're getting, unlike collectable card games.
Every expansion will contain all the cards that you need to play. The expansions are likely to contain new heroes (the Marvel universe has a lot to choose from), new scenarios and new villains. Previous FFG LCGs have required more than one core set to play to its full potential. Marvel Champions breaks away from this model and the core set has everything that is needed to play the game and customise the heroes.
Initial Thoughts
Marvel Champions looks like a wonderful adaptation of the Marvel Universe in to a LCG. FFG are known for their card games so there is no doubt that this one is going to be a hit. With the entire Marvel Universe to draw from, the game is ripe for plenty of expansions, scope and potential.
If you are a fan of the Marvel Universe, then this one is a must to check out. Who doesn't want to play as Tony Stark and build their own Iron Man suit with an Arc Reactor and Mark V armour? Or as Spider-Man swinging from the rooftops with your superhuman agility and inventing new spider-tech? Sign me up!
Marvel Champions is due to be released in the final quarter of 2019. We'll be adding the game to our store in the coming days.
