Magic: The Gathering – Dominaria United Box Topper Review

DOMINIRIA

The plane of Dominaria is home to some of Magic’s most well known and beloved characters and planes walkers - Urza, Karn, Teferi, Jhoira and of course, the almighty Squee! In Dominaria United, some of these characters have made it their mission to rally the forces of Dominaria against the impending Phyrexian invasion. Unfortunately, dark forces are at work and rumours of a Phyrexian sleeper agent have surfaced… Who can be trusted? Who amongst us has fallen pray to the Phyrexian’s evil whims?

I was lucky enough to be given a Box Topper for this set to open and review, so let’s crack that pack!

Top of the Box!

So, what exactly is a box topper? Box toppers are special bonus cards which come on top of a sealed booster box. They first appeared in eighth and ninth edition as oversized cards, but were revived again in 2018, as playable, regular sized cards. The most exciting thing about a box topper is that firstly, they don’t come in every set, making them more exclusive and of course, elusive! Secondly, they are special printings of well known cards in the set, often with alternate art, foiled, borderless or sometimes renamed to fit the them of the set (Such as the Kaijus in Ikoria’s Godzilla series or Dracula cards in Crimson Vow).

Delights from Dominaria

Dominaria United featured a cycle of 20 possible cards which could come in your box topper, known as ‘Legends Retold’. These were cards originally seen in the set ‘Legends’, but beefed up with some new, Dominaria pizzaz! Of the 20 cards, 25% were of mythic rarity, 25% were uncommon and the remaining 50% were rare. With only one card in the pack, it was very exciting to be able to rip the wrapper off and see which one I would be lucky enough to reveal! Before I finally reveal whether or not I got a card worth pulling, lets run through some of the cards on offer!

Sivitri, Dragon Master - Legendary Planeswalker: A Dimir card perfect in any Dragon deck!

Hazes, Shaper of Sand - Legendary Human Warrior: A Naya legend who care specifically about building an army of sand warriors, by making use of desert land cards and playing them again from your graveyard

Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary - Legendary Cat Mercenary: A Bant ‘legends matter’ card which focuses on getting you value from playing legendary creatures, in the form of evasive 2/2 cat warriors!

Tobias, Doomed Conqueror - Legendary Human Soldier: An Azorius soldier who doesn’t mind if his crew mates die in combat or otherwise, as he can bring them back as 2/2 zombies instead!

General Marhault Elsdragon- Legendary Elf Warrior: A Gruul commander who wants your opponents to block your big creatures in combat. Why? Because he will just make them even bigger!

Did I have Pack Luck?

When I opened my box topper, I was lucky enough to pull one of 5 mythic rare cards! My pull was Torsten, Founder of Benalia. A hefty, 7 drop 7/7 legendary human soldier who allows you loot creatures and lands from your library into your hand when he enters the battlefield. He also increases the size of your Selesnya army, by rallying seven 1/1 white soldier creature tokens to your aid when he dies.

For me, I was really pleased with this pull. Getting any mythic rare is an exciting reveal, but I think this one felt special because it was only one of 5 such cards available in this cycle of box toppers! I hope that if any of you invest in a booster box with a box topper, that the pack luck will be ever in your favour!
