Magic: The Gathering – Bloomburrow Play Booster Pack Review

When the arrival of terrifying beasts caused chaos in their villages, the creatures of Bloomburrow didn’t back down, instead, they rallied together to defend the realm and protect all which they hold dear. If you love cute (but powerful) forest critters, then Bloomburrow is the plane for you!

Small But Mighty Mechanics

As with all sets, MTG has unveiled some new Bloomburrow mechanics that are sure to ruffle your feathers!

Offspring: Found only on creature cards, this mechanic lets the whole critter family join in! At an additional (but optional) cost as the creature enters the battlefield, you can create a token copy of the creature with the same text/abilities, except it’s a 1/1 - double value! What I particularly love about this mechanic, is that each card with this ability has its own 1/1 token which comes alongside it, giving the cute offspring of these powerful parents their own moment in the spotlight.

Gift: Another optional cost that allows you to gift an opponent something, in order for you to gain a greater benefit from casting the spell. Kindness begets kindness, right? Be it the gift of drawing a card, or a tapped fish, the gift mechanic rewards you for embracing your opponent and hoping that the possible advantage you could be giving them, doesn't come back to bite you before you can bite first!

Forage: A mechanic that allows you additional advantages/ways to play (e.g playing creatures from your graveyard), in exchange for you sacrificing a food token or exiling cards from your graveyard.

Valiant: A triggered ability which occurs as a result of your creature being the target of a spell or ability, such as being able to give it a +1/+1 counter or a temporary buff

Expend: A mechanic that gives you additional perks once per turn, if you’ve spent the required amount of mana casting spells.

Pawprints: These cute little prints appear on modal sorcery spells, allowing you to select options, in any combination, up to the stated amount of paw prints (e.g 5 pawprints worth)

Cards To Get In A Flap About

Bloomburrow introduces a range of new and exciting artwork, alongside printings of cards we haven’t seen before. Whilst there are a tonne of cards I could list here, here are a few of my favourite cards to keep an eye out for when you're cracking packs!

Critterised Planeswalkers: Some of Magic’s best loved Planeswalkers have been given a furry makeover, such as Elspeth as a mighty mouse champion, Jace as a cunning fox and Liliana as a glorious black squirrel!

Borderless Raised Foil Variants: These cards are honestly stunning. Just stunning. The alternative artwork is sensational on them all, but the raised foil frames these cards in a way in which I haven’t seen before. Special mention has to be given to the borderless

raised foil variant of Lumra, Bellow of the Woods, which has been drawn by none other than Pokémon’s artist, Mitsuhiro Arita - famous for the base set Charizard art!

A Set To Stampede Towards Or Scurry Away From?

Bloomburrow is a fantastic set, which will see strength brought to old creature types and new tribes appear more frequently in constructed play. The new mechanics in this set will certainly get tails wagging with excitement, allowing for new styles of play and I for one am very excited to add some of the cards to my commander decks.
