Warhammer 40,000
Against the backdrop of a distant future, the galaxy has fallen into a pit of despair, hostility, and all-out war. The mutant, the heretic, and the alien isolate humanity and force them into combat across all fronts. There is no hope for a brighter future, only sacrifice against the dying of the light.
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
We will look at some of the powerful and influential female figures who helped shape the world of Warhammer.
Saint Celestine
Despair, and you give yourself to the shadows. Believe, truly believe in the Emperor of Mankind, and you shall walk in His light no matter how dark the path you tread.
A literal Living Saint, Celestine’s legend runs deep as a tool of the Emperor of Mankind Himself. From the Adepta Sororitas’ Order of Our Martyred Lady, Saint Celestine’s actions as a servant of the Emperor enabled her to become a being of incredible psychic power and benevolent faith.
She was believed to have fallen during the campaign against the Renegade Warmaster of Forrax. Yet through the divine will of the God-Emperor, Celestine was restored to become the physical embodiment of the might of the Emperor.
With wings spread wide, halo ablaze, and the Ardent Blade in hand, Saint Celestine’s shining presence and holy light fill the faithful with courage while Heretics recoil in terror.
To a Living Saint, death is only temporary.
Lotara Sarrin
By far one of the most notorious figures in the galaxy, Lotara Sarrin came to be both feared and revered during her peak in command within the World Eaters Legion.
At only 30 years of age, Lotara became the Captain of the flagship, the Conqueror, making her one of the youngest ship officers in the Imperium. Despite her youth and mortal status, she commanded respect amongst her peers and even formed a respectful relationship with Angron himself.
Known for her cold ruthlessness and tactical brilliance, it was easy to see why Lotara rose steadily in the ranks and remained vital to many of their successes. When the Horus Heresy broke out, Lotara stayed loyal to her Primarch, choosing to become a heretic with them.
When the Conqueror became corrupted through Khorne, Lotara remained one of the last holdouts against the twisted power of the Warp. Unfortunately, the power proved too much and she succumbed, her soul fusing with the machine spirit of the corrupted ship.
The brave, ruthless Lotara Sarrin became a sadistic, bloodthirsty specter known as The Mistress.
Severina Raine
Severina’s tale is one of duty. Assigned to the 11th Antari Rifles company headed by the extremely popular Captain Tevar Lun, Severina was thrown into a perilous situation when she was ordered to execute the captain.
Aware that the order was due to the captain refusing to carry out a command to assault the enemy fortress of Mone, Severina knew that to refuse to perform one’s duty was to fail the order of command and the Emperor.
Despite the threat of a mutiny following the execution of Captain Lun, Severina bravely faced the troops, defusing their fury by reminding them of their service to the God-Emperor, not that of any particular officer.
By taking up the mantle of Commissar, she emphasised that her command reflected the will of the God-Emperor. Undertaking the assault previously rejected by Captain Lun, the company was ultimately successful, penetrating the fortress and destroying the citadel.
The Imperial offensive will continue with Severina Raine a vital member in command.
Yvraine
The Dark Gods rise. We must rise higher, the better to cast them down.
Known by her various titles and epithets including the Emissary of Ynnead and the Herald of the Whispering God, Yvraine is the High-Priestess of Ynnead, the leader of the Ynnari, and a tool for the God of Death.
While seen as an inspirational figure, a beacon of hope for the dying Eldar race, she has equally become associated as a symbol of destruction, a figure of delusion leading the Eldar into doom. It is still yet to be seen which side will prove correct.
Raised in the ways of the Path of the Performer, Yvraine sought a different life, eventually exploring the Path of the Warrior and the Path of the Warlock respectively. Later, as she followed the Path of the Seer and gained a deeper understanding of her psychic skills, Yvraine fought in Biel-Tan’s armies.
However, her homeworld of Craftworld grew too restrictive for Yvraine, and she became an Outcast, wandering the Galaxy as a Corsair and in time becoming a feared admiral. When mutiny forced her to flee, Yvraine faced her ambitions and desire for change.
Partaking in a ritual to awaken the Whispering God from his slumber, Yvraine battled on the Grand Arena of Commorragh against Lelith Hesperax, eventually becoming mortally wounded. As she lay dying, the Whispering God, who was partially stirred from his slumber, came into contact with Yvraine’s spirit and chose her as his Herald. Yvraine was Reborn, with newfound power and a purpose to bring Ynnead to its full potential.
By spreading the word of the God of the Dead, she rallied Eldar of all backgrounds, Reborn as the Ynnari. Since then, Yvraine and the Ynnari have enabled the resurrection of the Primarch Roboute Guilliman and leader of the Imperium of Man, thus solidifying an uneasy alliance between humanity and the Ynnari to combat the unceasing forces of Chaos.
Euphrati Keeler
A Remembrancer of seemingly little importance, Euphrati demonstrated that even the lowest-ranking members of the Imperium could become vital to the cause should their faith prove unshakable.
Working during the final days of the Great Crusade aboard the Warmaster Horus’ flagship, Vengeful Spirit, Euphrati had a terrifying experience when she encountered a Chaos Daemon named Samus who had possessed the body of Luna Wolves Sergeant Xavyer Jubal and brutally murdered the entire group apart from Euphrati and the Imperial Iterator Kyril Sindermann.
Despite a cover-up of the murders and being deeply shaken, Euphrati turned to her deep devotion to the Emperor of Mankind and joined the Lectitio Divinitatus.
Her devotion became clear to all when Kyril Sindermann accidentally summoned a Daemon in the library of the Vengeful Spirit. Standing before the Daemon, clutching the symbol of the Aquila, Euphrati banished the creature back to The Warp through the power of her faith.
Falling into what could only be described as a restorative coma, news of the miraculous deed that Euphrati had just performed spread far and wide. When the Horus Heresy broke out, she became canonised as one of the first saints of the Imperial Cult and was recognised as a prophet of the Emperor.
Tanau Aleya
A fierce Witch Seeker and member of the Sisters of Silence, Tanau hailed from the small convent on Araissa. While completing a mission, she became aware of the Black Legion set to attack the convent itself. Despite her best efforts, Tanau’s entire convent was murdered.
After discovering a cryptic message, she made for Terra and was rescued by a Black Ship commanded by Navradaran and filled with Sisters from other convents. Upon reaching Terra, Tanau found it in the grips of war. During the Second Battle of the Lion’s Gate, she encountered and fought valiantly alongside a Custodian named Valerian. Together, alongside other Sisters and Grey Knights, they managed to topple a Bloodthirster.
Convinced and armed with evidence that the Khornate invasion was merely a diversion, Tanau joined forces with Valerian once again in a mission to the world of
Vorlese and stop the Chaos forces from using a corrupted Pylon Shard from Cadia to further damage Terra.
Since then, Tanau has been appointed a Knight-Centura following Roboute Guilliman reinstating her order.
Katarinya Greyfax
Faith. In the right hands, it is Humanity’s greatest weapon. Yet even the finest blade is rendered fallible by its wielder. In the wrong hands, the mighty sword of faith can do more hurt to the Emperor’s Realm than can all the treacherous daemons of the Warp combined. This is why those who profess to be the most holy amongst us must be put to the sternest test.
The unyielding, uncompromising Inquisitor Greyfax has one purpose and that is to act as executioner of those she deems as Heretics. From her hazy origins when she escaped the clutches of the Necron Overlord Trazyn the Infinite on Cadia, her psychic abilities and unrelenting hunting skills surround Katarinya in mystery and fear.
Armed with her Condemnor Bolter and power sword Tyrantslayer, Katarinya has proved herself crucial in the Emperor’s service as she tracks down artefacts and investigates the damned.
Anuradha Daaz
Born to Mentor serf parents, Anuradha grew to resent the Mentors following the tragic and brutal death of her brother at the hands of a Mentor recruit, an act that the recruit was later commended on.
When Anuradha became a serf herself, she was assigned to Mentor Lieutenant Commander Amadeus Kaias Incarius. Accompanying the Lieutenant Commander on missions, she quickly became embroiled in danger and intrigue with the Emperor’s Spears, the Exilarchy, and Chaos forces.
Despite being tempted by freedom, wealth, and luxury, Anuradha performed her duty and ultimately remained in service to Amadeus and the Emperor’s Spears until her elderly years.
Jenit Sulla
Enthusiastic, headstrong, and brave to the point of foolishness, Jenit Sulla was a Valhallan officer of astounding esteem. Serving with the 296th Valhalla Regiment and the 597th Valhalla Regiment under Colonel Regina Kasteen, Jenit’s strategist abilities enabled multiple successes on the battlefield. Ultimately, her capability and competence led to her becoming one of the first female officers to reach the rank of Lady General.
She would later go on to write her memoirs, describing the founding of the 597th Regiment along with the campaigns and victories she experienced there.
Commander Shadowsun
We act as one, and united we cannot fall.
Known among her people as Shas’O Serra, our final female figure from the Warhammer universe is an extremely fierce T’au commander. Utilising her mastery of the Kau’yon, fighting style, along with stealth and tactical ambush, Commander Shadowsun is a deadly warrior.
An active participant during the T’au Empire’s Third Sphere Expansion, Shadowsun commandeered the T’au Fire Castle military campaign. This led her to become known as the Heroine of the Third Sphere Expansion.
Since the betrayal of the Greater Good by Commander Farsight, Shadowsun was chosen by the T’au Empire’s ruling Ethereal Supreme Aun’va as a replacement to conduct the Third Sphere Expansion.
From formidable leaders to devout followers of the Imperium, these women of the Warhammer 40,000 universe demonstrate a fascinating strength and diversity within a galaxy that finds itself perpetually at war. Their contributions, within the grim darkness, highlight that influence, power, and skill know no gender in the 41st millennium.
