Lander: After The Crash – A Sci-fi Must Have!

AFTER THE CRASH

Sorry to do this to you, but I’m about to give you a brand new anxiety-fuelled nightmare. You’re on a space voyage, and your vehicle crash lands on a very, very distant planet. You’ve survived, but rescue will be a very long time coming. Yeah, you’re stuck. It’s time to get self-sufficient! Honestly, that’s the part that stresses me out most: all that living off the land nonsense. I’d just keel over and die. Luckily your ship is stacked with tech you can use to establish a colony and get humankind off on a good foot. Somehow. God knows which buttons do what. You’d better figure it out though! Because there’s others who can use those buttons and switches, and they intend to get themselves a leg up ahead of you. If they can get a colony up and running successfully, then untold rewards will be theirs. So what you waiting for? Get those rewards for yourself!

Lander: After The Crash from Intrepid Games is currently listed as a 2-4 player game, however a solo mode is in the works which looks as if it will be app-led. It’s set for an approximate two hour playtime, so expect a game you can get your teeth into. Lander is a space-themed strategy game with a blend of area control, tableau building and set collection (missions). Players will assume the roles of corporations, competing to prepare Kaimas-2, which is the first planet outside of our solar system capable of supporting human life for a large-scale colonization effort. The corporation that contributes the most will become the market leader, so you'll need to get your strategy together.

In the publisher's words: At its core, Lander is a game of options. On any given turn, you'll have many potential directions to go in, which gives you a lot of flexibility in how you plan your strategy. It also enables you to pivot when something unanticipated happens (e.g. acid rain reduces the colony's food production, a rival corporation relocates one of your structures, the mission you were working towards gets completed just before you can grab it!). This means that no matter how bleak things may seem, there's almost always a way back in!

Unique leadership abilities and action cards can be used to pull back your opponents or further your own interests, while event cards will force you to make difficult choices that can impact yourself or the entire colony. You are self-interested corporations, struggling to survive on a foreign planet - don't be surprised if the planetary conditions change or your colleagues put something toxic in your soup.

Full disclosure: I’m currently digging into the prototype version of the game, so if I’m talking in excitable tones, it’s because I’m enjoying what I’ve played so far and feel that a bit more buzz needs to be generated around this release. Your available options ramp up dramatically as the years progress and your engine (board gaming pun there) goes into overdrive. There’s a lot of game here with plenty of reasons to keep coming back. Interest in Lander: After The Crash is accelerating, so head on over to the Kickstarter here and sign up for notification of the crowdfunding launch (lol)
