Horrified Meets Dungeons and Dragons!

HORRIFIED

I love Horrified. You love D&D. Hey, why don’t we get it on and smash those sweet IPs together, see what springs from their loins?

Sorry, you’re right, I definitely took that down a weird avenue. In a slightly surprise move, but one that actually looks like it could be a good match, one of the stars of modern board gaming is blending with the granddaddy of tabletop RPG goodness. There’s plenty of monster fighting and puzzle solving in D&D, so these two should slot together quite nicely. (It’s probably a better fight than Monopoly D&D to be honest.)

For those who don't know (and it's time you should) Horrified is a cooperative board game for one to five players, ages 10 and up, in which players work together to overcome puzzles and fight monsters by gathering tokens and protect citizens. This will be the fifth game in the franchise. Given that the previous instalment - Horrified: World of Monsters - was touted as a core set which would lead to monster expansions that could be added to this base game (we did actually see the release of the Krampus as an add-on), it's interesting to see that the next release in the Horrified franchise is another stand-alone game. It leaves me with a question: what does the Horrified road map look like? Stand-alones, base game with expansions, or a mix of both (which could prove confusing)? One thing at a time, eh? Let’s enjoy what we’re getting.

Which monstrosities from the beastiary will appear in this iteration? The boggled-eyed horror show that is the Beholder is guaranteed to be one of the four included. What else? I reckon that the owlbear has got to be a shoe-in, and something a bit dragony? Come on, it’s got to be. Just no gelatinous cubes, thank you very much. It made a good visual gag in the movie, but for Horrified we need our monsters a lot more active.

Ravensburger are wise enough not to miss a trick here: there will indeed be a D20 in the box, and it will be interesting to see how this is implanted alongside Horrified’s traditional triplet of hit dice whilst maintaining the expected frantic gameplay. My only niggle is that, once again, this sounds like it’s going to be a four monster Horrified rather than the early six monster games. It does mean less combos, and slightly less replayability…

It’s coming out Summer 2025, more info once the date firms up
