Hearing Things is a game spawned from the viral internet sensation that sees someone reading a phrase while the other wears headphones so they cannot hear what is being said. Hilarity will usually ensue as the headphone-wearing player guesses what is being said by reading their lips!
Hasbro has decided to bring this game to the masses by releasing “Hearing Things,” boxing up the concept and providing phrases so you can play straight out the box!
What do you get?
In the Hearing Things box you will find a set of headphones, a pack of cards with the phrases, the instructions and that’s it! You’re ready to go.
How to play Hearing Things
Split the players into two teams and decide who is going first. One player starts by putting the headphones on and presses the button on the side to initiate the off-putting sound effect (it sounds like you are in a room of very loud people talking all at once!).
The other players in the team then take it in turns reading aloud the phrases printed on the cards. Once a phrase has been correctly guessed, the player reads the next card and so on, until the 60 seconds are up. The other team then does exactly the same and this continues until a winner is declared (the amount of points needed to win is determined by the players).
Final Thoughts on Hearing Things
The fun of this game really comes from the incorrect guesses made by the player wearing the headphones. While playing, many stupid guesses were made and it just adds to the hilarity.
The concept and gameplay is incredibly simple and people will pick this up in no time at all. You are also not limited to the phrases in the box, as you are more than able to come up with your own! Overall, it's a fun party game that all the family can enjoy.
Unfortunately, there is one big drawback in my opinion! The headphones! While they provide distraction for the player wearing them, it is still possible (and very easy) to hear the phrases being spoken by the other players. I found myself having to press the headphones against my ears to try and block out more sound! We found if the players reading the phrases out mouthed or whispered the phrase, it made sure the other player couldn’t hear anything. While it isn’t ideal, it did work better.
Hearing Things, apart from that, plays well and is sure to provide players with a good laugh! This is must have party game for all the family!
