Halloween Events in Video Games 2021

halloween event call of duty 2021

Seasonal events have become a wonderful mainstay of gaming. With Halloween upon us, October sees many games bringing out their spooky content to scare us silly. Here’s a rundown of the Halloween events in video games 2021.

Animal Crossing New Horizons: Fall Update

September 30 - October 31

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first to kick things off this year with a bunch of new seasonal items to dress up in or decorate your island with. On Halloween night proper, throw on your costume and pay pumpkin-headed Jack a visit. He’ll give you exclusive Halloween items in exchange for the candy you can collect throughout the event. So treat the candy like toilet paper and petrol and get stockpiling it like an unstoppable mindless Sun reader.

Fortnite: Fortnitemares

October 5 - November 1

The only thing scarier than Fortnite’s meteoric success is it’s Halloween event, which returns again. As you’d expect the new event features new skins, such as Frankenstein and Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead (so that’s where he went!). The island will also be covered in spooky decorations.

Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost Halloween

October 12 - November 2

Bungie is once again bringing Festival of the Lost back to Destiny. This time around, players can enjoy the new Haunted Lost Sectors mode, and earn unique rewards for their Guardian. Thankfully the amount of items available to buy using the in-game currency Bright Dust rather than spending actual money on Silver has increased. Once day Bungie might be able to shake off the title the Destiny community have given this event - The Festival of the Cost.

Overwatch: Halloween Terror

October 12 - November 2

Halloween Terror 2021 sees the return of the Junkenstein’s Revenge mode. The update adds a clown skin for Roadhog, a Draugr skin for Reinhardt, a vampire countess skin for Brigitte, and a Vampire Bat skin for Echo. Along with other victory poses, dances and weekly rewards.

Apex Legends: Monsters Within

October 12 - November 2

Apex Legends’ Monsters Within event provides Halloween-themed costumes for Revenant, Bloodhound, Caustic, and Seer. There’s also the return of Shadow Royale, in which killed players can come back in a shadow-form.

Minecraft: Spookyfest

October 13 - November 2

Mojang is getting in on the spooky fun with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons. Dungeons will add some more scary options. While from October 26, Minecraft players will be able to download the free Halloween Fiends skin pack.

Rocket League: Haunted Hallows

October 14 - November 1

Haunted Hallows will add a host of content inspired by the DC’s Batman. Players can pick up Batmobile cars inspired by the 1989 and 2016 films, as well as participate in Gotham City Rumble.

Call of Duty Warzone/Black Ops Cold War: The Haunting

October 19 - November 2

Call of Duty season six is almost here and roughly coincides with Halloween. Both Warzone and Black Ops Cold War are hosting themed events collectively called The Haunting.

This time around, there’s a new killer: the iconic Ghostface from the Scream franchise. Also available is a skin from Donnie Darko resembling Frank, the giant rabbit. This one is an operator skin bundle for Baker. Last year had two killers, Leatherface and Jigsaw, let's see how these icons compare.

Activision hasn’t revealed all the details yet but one unconfirmed report suggests a Scream Deathmatch mode for Black Ops Cold War in which teams of killers dressed up like Ghostface (and possibly Frank from Donnie Darko) hunt down teams of survivors. No word on what to expect from Warzone, but last year’s event introduced a night-time version of the Verdansk map and a horror-themed game-mode called Zombi.
