The pandemic has had a negative effect on pretty much every industry, and video gaming is no exception. For the second year running now, the BAFTA Games Awards ceremony has been held remotely. It seems that these unprecedented times haven’t stopped some game designers from working their magic. Chief among these elite few is Supergiant Games. Their prodigal son Hades took home five wins at this year’s BAFTA Games Awards. Hades was even a nominee for four more.
Not only did Hades take home the coveted gong in the Best Game category, but it also bagged first place in four other categories. This year was chock full of some stiff competition. Hades was able to beat out Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Half-Life: Alyx for Best Game. Critics praised Hades’ unique art style and gameplay.
Sweeping Success
Along with Best Game, Hades took home the gold in the Narrative, Game Design, and Artistic Achievement categories. Logan Cunningham won first place for his voice work. Taking home the gold for the voices of Poseidon, Achilles, Hades and a host of other characters.
Supergiant Games’ creative director, Greg Kasavin, said that completing Hades during a global pandemic had its challenges, but it is not an experience he will soon forget. Kasavin revealed that the trust the team put in one another was both “tested […] but was really just what got us through this." Agreeing with Kasavin, Supergiant Games’ studio director and co-founder Amir Rao hoped that fans of the game would come out with a “lasting positive impression.”
After taking bringing home gold in such a broad range of categories, it seems that Hades could well become a staple for many gamers out there.
