Following the news earlier this week that the Xbox 360 is now discontinued, Zatu Games wanted to take a quick look back at some of the greatest Xbox 360 games which graced the console.
There were many great titles released, making it hard to choose a select few as the best. Many gamers will have their own favourites and may disagree. but here are some of our greatest Xbox 360 games:
Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V is one of the all-time gaming masterpieces and is still breaking records on the new generation consoles. The original version on the Xbox 360 was equally as impressive though and, in this writer's opinion, was the greatest Xbox 360 game.
GTAV was one of the biggest games ever made for the 360. The console handled it perfectly and the finished product looked amazing. The graphical quality of this game was phenomenal and was easy one of, if not thee, best-looking games on the console.
Not only did it look great, but GTAV was also a great game to play. The campaign literally had twists and turns at every mission. Being able to play as and switch between three completely different characters was a great addition.
Guns, cars, bikes, boats, jumbo jets, helicopters, jet skis, dogs, wild animals - GTAV really did have it all.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare Series
Everybody knows that Call of Duty is the one of the biggest-selling franchises in video gaming history - but it was arguably the Modern Warfare series where the success began.
Modern Warfare brought a fresh feeling to the genre - moving away from World War 2 - with revolutionary mechanics and multiplayer innovations.
The trilogy of games continued the same storyline and the same characters through a modern-day battle. The campaigns were intense and featured great environments and weapons.
Then there was the online! You could spend hours online with your friends or with other gamers. The online modes was fun, challenging and very,very competitive. From Team Deathmatch to all-vs-all the Modern Warfare series had everything you needed from an online shoot-em-up!
Who can forget getting a big kill streak and sending in the air strikes to destroy the opposition.
Assassin's Creed 2
Don't get me wrong, the first Assassin's Creed game was a good game. It brought a fresh concept to the table but left players wanting to do more within the game.
Assassin's Creed 2 did just that. The second game introduced Ezio Auditore, the assassin that we would follow for a further two games. Set in Renaissance Italy, players were able to fight the Templars through Florence, Venice, Tuscany and Forli - all of which looked fantastic.
The combat system was much more advanced, with players being able to block and disarm the enemy. Ezio could wield two hidden blades, a poison blade and even a small firearm. Along with the swords and daggers, Assassin's Creed 2's fighting scenes really were epic.
The storyline was brilliant, the characters were brilliant and the gameplay was brilliant. There have been many more games in the series since Assassin's Creed 2, but this is arguably the greatest.
Project Gotham Racing 3
A launch game for the Xbox 360 which turned out to be one of the very best racing games ever made. 'PGR3' allowed players to race over 80 exotic cars around London, New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo and the famous Nurburgring circuit.
Some of the most expensive and luxurious cars on the game included concepts, one-off's and prototypes that could go well over 200mph. The cars were excellent to drive, each with their own individual handling style.
Kudos were a huge part of the game, rewarding you from drifting round corners, drafting your rivals and getting wheels off the ground. The faster you drove the more kudos points you would receive.
Then there was the online mode! Racing other enthusiasts and your friends online was such great fun. Such was the success of PGR3, a follow-up soon followed which introduced motorbikes and online team races. Countless hours were spent enjoying this racing series.
Gears of War
Massive guns with chainsaws on them - need we say more? Gears of War became an instant classic and an alternative to the Halo series.
The game focused on the troops of Delta Squad as they wield a desperate, last-ditch attempt to save the remaining human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless and genocidal subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde.
Working as a team of four through the campaign, you would come across many enemies and huge monsters - with the emphasis on using cover very much at the forefront. The player could have two primary weapons, grenades and a secondary weapon - this was all out action.
The sight of seeing a monster being ripped to shreds by the chainsaw was brutal yet slightly entraining in the world of gaming.
The online play was also great with 4 vs 4 death matches, assassination and king of the hill styled modes.
Rock Band
Everybody knows about the fun that Guitar Hero could offer but Rock Band was on an entirely different level. Now you and your friends could make your very own rock band in your own home.
The game came with a USB microphone, a drum set and guitar controllers. The guitar was a similar style to that used in the Guitar Hero series. The drum set features four rubber drum pads with coloured rings around them and a kick pedal.
The games featured over 50 amazing rock songs from the likes of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters.
Rock Band was ideal for family gathering and parties - or for just for solo play. Trying to master all of the instruments was a challenge but it was so much fun doing it.
