Rebuild, Return, Recycle!

It’s something we don’t often consider when playing any sort of tabletop game, but perhaps we should. How much do we waste? Your average board game generally doesn’t have much, if anything, in it that isn’t needed, but this is true for every game. Some games have tokens to punch out, others have parts that are built to be one use only. So what do we do with these parts we no longer have any use for? Ideally, we recycle them. That’s easy when it’s card or paper, just put it in the normal recycling. But what about high density plastic and old paint pots?

This is the difficulty many wargamers have when playing popular games such as Warhammer 40k or Age of Sigmar. Games Workshop builds their models using very high quality, high density plastic, which is not generally recyclable. So you buy a new box of models, cut out the pieces you need and build your models. What’s left? Well, many people will cut out the extra pieces for spare parts, but that still leaves the sprue, which just becomes waste at that point.

Fear not, Games Workshop have announced a new trial programme where sprue recycling boxes will begin appearing in various stores around the country from the end of March. Just take your used sprues into the store and pop them in the box. Paint pots too. You don’t even have to clean them (just make sure they have no liquid left inside them). It’s happening in a limited amount of stores to start with, but we can only hope it expands in the future so we can avoid waste wherever possible. Thanks Games Workshop and your recycling!
