It’s time to put the Magick in Magic!
A brand new Magic: The Gathering set has been announced, weaving the intricate world of Final Fantasy with the beloved card trading game. This means you can command your favourite Final Fantasy characters to cast powerful spells, summon fantastical gods and beasts, and even…go fishing?
On 13th June 2025, we’ll see released:
- Limit Break Commander Deck, based on arguably the most successful Final Fantasy instalment of all time, VII (red-green-white)
- Rival Trace Commander Deck, based on Final Fantasy VI (red-white-black)
- Counter Blitz Commander Deck, based on Final Fantasy X (green-white-blue)
- Scions & Spellcraft Commander Deck, based on Final Fantasy XIV (white-blue-black)
- Various Final Fantasy boosters
- Collector & play booster boxes
- Bundles & gift bundles
- Final Fantasy MTG starter kit
Whilst the Commander Decks only show 4 of the FF games, boosters will include every mainline game up to the latest, XVI.
Summons are one of the most renowned aspects of FF, along with adorable chocobos, the salamander horrors Tonberrys, and the ridiculously OP cactuars. Alongside iconic heroes like Cloud, Tidus, and Terra, we’ll also see Magic: The Gathering’s first ever Saga creatures. These incredibly powerful creatures enter the battlefield with one lore counter, granting an immediate effect—but act quick! They only stay around for a few turns, much like the games’ Summons. So far, we have ice goddess Shiva taking centre stage, but hopefully we’ll also see Bahamut, Ifrit, and Leviathan in the mix.
A handful of other showcase treatments are in play, giving specific legendary creature cards special borderless designs. Illustrated by Japanese artists, the backgrounds are carefully designed to emulate the character’s first in-game appearance, such as Stiltzkin the Moogle Merchant from FFIX, the Jumbo Cactuar first seen in FFVIII, and Yuffie Kisaragi, one of the most popular companions from FFVII.
I am so excited to see some of my favourite characters lovingly illustrated, with the synergies and stylised attacks that emulate plenty of my core video game memories.
